Newb with a few questions so I can setup right

Poop boards are a must. But I would seriously go someplace buy tin or aluminum sheets, cut it, snip the corners and bend it to make a tray. Then spray paint them with a good primer and an enamel paint. Wood trays are heavy and soak up the stink. Can't really clean them well. Plastic is good...

Newb with a few questions so I can setup right

I had my cages in a rack style setup. The males were on bottom. They could hear the girls buy not see them. I tried different ratios but finally settled on 1:6/7. The males just bred so much I had females with no head feathers and then they started breaking skin. And when it was time to move...

Newb with a few questions so I can setup right

And mine did free feed to a point. I only put in what I thought they would eat for 24 hours. I never filled my feeders completely full unless I planned on going away for longer than the 24. This kept them from throwing food out and wasting it.

Newb with a few questions so I can setup right

I did rotate males. I left them with my girls for about a week before I saved the eggs for hatching. I collected for a week. Then the males were removed and kept together until I was ready for a new batch. I tried to only keep the stock that was the biggest to replace what I had breeding.

quail pens alternatives? other than wood

PVC pipe is cheap, light, easy to cut with no mess and just presses together. Lots of fittings for joints keeps possibilities near endless. Use screws for a more secure fit. Glue for a permanent fitting. It also doesn't rot and washes really easy.

    neutralizing quail poop

Do not use heat. It will stink to high heaven. The sheer amount of poop is crazy but to heat it on a stove? Clean more than once daily. Put fans on it. Take outside and spread it to dry. Flush it down your toilet. Whatever you do don't try cooking it to dry it!!!

Who is raising their own Thanksgiving turkey?

We raised ours. We had broad breasted bronze. I processed one of the hens and she had to be over 20lbs processed. That was about a month ago. I'll have the other done in a few days. She should be just as big or bigger. I feed a mix because I have a lit of stuff together. I would do a bag or...

    neutralizing quail poop

I don't know the weather in your area, but I would not use heat. My birds hate the heat. They drink more water and tend to lay around. And anything that puts out heat uses more electricity. A small box fan or round hamster wheel type fan will move lots of air. These things grow and reproduce so...

    Predator problem help GRAPHIC pics

I would seriously go with raccoon. Get yourself some "duke dog proof traps". Bait with mini marshmallow, cat food, and break open some fish oil capsules. You will get your coons.

    neutralizing quail poop

The fans also cause enough turbulence that flies don't really like it and land a lot less.

    neutralizing quail poop

You ferment it by putting it in a bucket with water. All the way under water. Put it in a bag so when its pulled up it drains. I'd really reduce the number of birds. Dry it faster by placing fans on the ends of the dates blowing across the poop.

I'm still rolling with coturnix. Time will tell though.

    Gender ID (URGENT)

How old is the male? This bird only looks like its a few weeks old. It could be younger than the one you have and that would account for this one being smaller. I've not seen button quail chicks, but coturnix are about the size of a ping pong ball when hatched.

    Gender ID (URGENT)

Looks like all my female coturnix to me. When I Google "king quail" I get something different than the above. Maybe someone had a coturnix egg in a king hatch and it just got missed when hatched. This is going to sound bad but I worked at a pet store. I sold many things. Do you know how many...

    feeding guppies?

And I was just making it a point to let someone know another view. Many people that ask questions on here are just unfamiliar. And they just need to have all options out there. Sometimes they just have to make a decision and jump. No harm no foul. Its all just opinions and what I've noted...

    feeding guppies?

If you mean terrible by them being more greasy or more oily/fatty.... sure. That's a matter of opinion and cooking method. But their fat content and how its stored has more to do with them being a migratory bird. They story extra fuel in the form of fat. Saying things that eat fish taste bad...

    feeding guppies?

People eat lots of things that eat fish. Ducks, geese, crabs, lobster, shrimp.....some of those things eat strictly fish(or shellfish). I'll bet fish meal, is in most poultry feed. Its a cheap additive that increases protein, calcium, and other vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Its...
