I am in the middle of my spring vacation and in the midst of a turkey hatch. It is really funny how all of my teaching friends are following the hatch from Florida and other areas. I had good intentions of getting some paperwork done this week, but it is much more fun tending to the animals.
My Tom I don't trust around my young ones. He has chased both and pecked my 3 year old's back. He is never a problem around adults, though. I have a 1500 square foot pen for them that they hang in when the kids are out and free range on days that the kids will not be playing in the yard. All...
Bourbons are great. I have two incubators with them right now and a hen sitting on 10 eggs. One incubator on lockdown and due to hatch on Wednesday. I hope you have as much of an adventure as I am having. Good luck.
It's getting closer and I am getting excited! My first batch has a very high fertility rate (21 out of 25) Not sure how many I'll get but am happy with my big Tom. I haven't candled my second batch yet but can't wait to try. This wednesday will be day 10 for them. Am hoping you get...
I have two incubators going with 4 dozen eggs total. Haven't candled yet(Like I would know what to look for anyway). First batch should hatch on the 24th and second on May 5th. How about yours? I am going to put a weeks worth in the nesting box to see if I can get one of the hens to sit on...
I just ordered my spring broilers. I pick up 30 sometime late next week. Anyone else out there raising any meat birds this spring? Last year I raised them to 7 weeks and had very large birds. I am thinking of raising half as cornish hens and then harvesting the rest at 5 or 6 weeks instead...
Am so sorry for the loss of birds. Hoping that you get many healthy chicks from the remaining few and that Meyer does well by your losses. I have used Meyer with great results and hope that they take good care of you.
Congratulations! I have been collecting for 10 days now and will be setting what I get in the incubator on Friday. I am up to 18 eggs right now and am hoping for 24 by Friday. It is my first time setting eggs and am hoping for positive results!
Let's just hope the forecast is wrong!!! We all deserve for it to be over! I have collected 6 turkey eggs since Friday and hope to have as many as 12-15 within a week to set in the incubator. Good luck with your hatch Caroline. I am one town over in Danville.
Congratulations. I have thought about eating a couple but I get over 2 dozen chicken eggs a day, so there is no shortage of eggs here. I really hope to build up my flock and sell a bunch of poults.
I am glad others are in the beginning stage with me. I am certainly hoping that my other hens start laying soon. Is it true that you can collect turkey eggs for 15 days before setting in the incubator? I hope so, that way I can put more in there. I would hate to wait too long though...
So, I just got home after a long 14 hour day at work to find my first bourbon red egg. I have 4 hens and a tom that are now 9 months old. They have been mating for about a month. I am hoping that the other 3 hens will start soon. If I have this right, I need to wait a couple weeks after they...
