Old Fashioned, Common Sense Chicken Keeping.

We raise our (kids') pet chickens/ducks with the meat/egg chickens/ducks. Is there a reason you separate? Our decision was based on not wanting to bother, but maybe we should. I always joke that my husband will be person non grata at the chicken coop if he keeps walking out with some and not...

Need help with breed and sex identification?

She looks nothing like barred rock now. Also, the original barred rock we thought we got looks more like an Australorp. One day, I'll sit down and figure out what happened there.

Old Fashioned, Common Sense Chicken Keeping.

I'm a mix of both, I think. I raise my birds for eating, and homeschool education. My husband will eat the misbehavers, and extra roos if they make it that long, or when he gets tired of them, we offer them to people at work. The kids and I eat the eggs, but not the actual animal. This...

Need help with breed and sex identification?

Our Australorp has a yellow spot on her head. The grey legs made me think Barred Rock pullet, but even my BR have a yellow dot.... Soooooo.... I'm new to chickens, but after I picked up a sick chick from TSC, the manager gives them to me every time I'm in there now, and we've turned into sort...

Need help with breed and sex identification?

Yes to the names. I have ducks named after the Justice League. Starfire looks like any of the Reds I have: Production, Rhode Island, New Hampshire. My current New Hampshire rehabilitations have white and grey wings when spread, but they're not quite that red, yet. (Just acquired them)

    What ducks do I have?

A Aren't they still too young (2 and 3 weeks) for a sexing quack? Can't tell if any are raspy, just loud and clearly a quack.

Also, confirmed that all quack. Loudly. Specifically when separated.

    What ducks do I have?

It's always so loud here between the kids/dogs/poultry that I can't honestly tell you if I've heard Diana quack, yet. Pretty sure I have as I'm almost positive they've all done the duckling quack on their way being separated for the 30 seconds it takes to get them into the bathtub. I'll double...

    What ducks do I have?

Darkwing (the potential Runner) has grown some impressive chest hair, as we like to call it. Ready dark feather shafts have popped up over the last few days. We thought s/he had rolled in poop at first glance, before we gave her a bath and it didn't go away. Lol The other is mostly brown when...

    Dogs Protecting Chickens

I have an Australian shepherd/Shiba inu mix puppy and I'm waiting to see what he does when he finally gets over the "YAY! BALL!" stage.

    Dogs Protecting Chickens

Unfortunately, lab breeds are bred for birding. Just like my Daschund attacks our hamster, my lab would love to catch our chickens. They're easy to train, though, so you may be able to break him of it. I currently have my chocolate lab on strict "just smell" supervised visits.

    What to do with guineas...

My guineas were stupid as all get out. They'd forget where the door was when they were two feet from it.

    So, this happened..

My husband and I both have a tendency to bring home animals that need homes. We either rehabilitate them, or re-home them when possible. Cats, dogs, rodents.... Doesn't matter. Our youngest daughter already has a master plan to use it to get guinea pigs or rabbits someday soon. Funny...

    So, this happened..

I just realized all my grammar inconsistencies. Hard to pay attention to auto correct problems while out in public, I guess.

    So, this happened..

Thank you, but I just got home and it's the first thing I did. Just sad she didn't make it.

    So, this happened..

:( She died before I even got her home. At least it was outside, like a chick should go. Thanks anyway, guys.

    So, this happened..

No evidence of it. Just picked up a nursing kit from a pet store to mix her stuff in.

    So, this happened..

Do chicken diseases pass to ducks? My ducks are perfect baby carers.we always throw the picked on chicks in with them. However, I love my duckies and don't want them getting sick

    So, this happened..

She isn't my only chick. My others are over 2 weeks old, though. Dont want them all getting sick, though, obviously. Bought a bin at Target to keep her in.
