Seeing Eye Goose for a Blind Dog. Seeking Advice

Here is our dog. She is a 6 year old female mix breed that we adopted as a puppy. She was raised her whole life around ducklings, ducks and little kids. She is adapting well to blindness, and she is getting better every day and is as goodnatured as ever. She isn't aggressive, and has never...

Seeing Eye Goose for a Blind Dog. Seeking Advice

I have a good incubator that has worked to hatch dozens of ducks. And I can accommodate a plan B of having the gosling hatchlings bond with each other. I've heard that geese are really smart and very protective of their "flock" even if it includes non-geese, I just wonder if it could work.

Seeing Eye Goose for a Blind Dog. Seeking Advice

My poor 6-year-old dog suddenly went blind. She suffered an acute case of Blastomycosis that robbed her of her sight. She loved to wander the woods by our house and rest in the sun in the yard. I am thinking about hatching a gosling to help her enjoy her time outdoors. Maybe if I can get a...

Eggs at day 26: advice needed please!

That's good news. The hatches seem to be running behind schedule, was the incubator cool? Any chance you a have Muscovy eggs?

Eggs at day 26: advice needed please!

Float test only as a last resort. Hold the egg to your ear, if you hear, "click, click, click" it is a great sign! It means they are pipped internally and starting to use their lungs. If you don't hear anything, then candle them and look for an internal pip and/or movement. Remember...

    Duck egg issues

:welcome That is strange. It sounds like you are feeding them the right things! How much are they eating? And do they have equal access to the feed? Or does the good layer eat it all herself?

Should I be concerned about this little one?

Sounds good. I have 13 eggs in the incubator, due next week. I can't wait to see them hatch. The hatchlings are such fun!

One of my Pekin ducks died, should I get a new duck for my other Pekin duck?

Yes. Ducks are social flock animals. They do better with other ducks. Any breed will be fine. It may take a week or two for your ducks to get acclimated to one another, but after that it will be better for her. The predator will probably come back, so you should give some thought to...

    New ducklings!

Get some brewers yeast or niacin tablets as a supplement to your starter feed. Water management will be a pain in your brooder because ducklings like to play and splash in their water and they will get their bedding wet. Get frozen peas for a treat for them. Have fun!

PLEASE HELP - New Potential Duck Owner!

A big run is a good idea beacause of your schedule. A good secure run will keep them protected even if noone can put them in their coop each night. I would recommend a bigger run and i would recommend making sure the pen has good drainage. You will be emptying your pool daily or every other...

    My duck is coughing?

Your duck sounds very sick with some kind of respiratory or sinus infection. You should separate her from the other duck, put her in clean bedding, give her fresh water, and you may want to get some medicated feed or water soluble antibiotics. She sounds very sick.

    Female Pekin looks rough

Chronic wet feathers are covered on page 277 of Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks. Dave Holderread says to check for mites, which can cause the problem, or possibly a plugged or infected preening gland. If it is the preening gland, he says to massage it a few times a day, apply a warm compress...

    Female Pekin looks rough

It doesn't look like molting to me. It looks like a preening problem, maybe a clogged preening glad. I remember reading something about treatment in Storey's guide for ducks. Let me go take a look.
