I do not. However, I also had an issue with a woodchuck getting into my coop, and read somewhere that they hate cayenne pepper. I sprinkled a good amount around my coop door, ..and it worked! The fat guy has moved on. :)
I have a White Rock roo, a very sweet bird that I raised from a chick, who started showing aggression towards me at 2 years old. I received the usual advice of culling him, yet due to the fact that he is the perfect gentleman with my free-range hens and protects them to the point where the hawks...
My vote is pullet! She seems to be quite feathered out, which my expert chicken friends taught me is a very good sign. ..assuming you're hoping for a girl. :-)
Again, I understand the "Cull him!" mentality for those who breed chickens, yet there are many of us, (myself included), who keep chickens for eggs, pets, and/or just the fun and benefits of having them around. Also worth noting, is the fact that "vicious" is a far cry from sass and attitude...
Thanks Chooks! ..for everything!
I have no experience with chickens in the purebred vs mutt debate, yet with all of the other animals I've had in my lifetime, the majority of them being rescues, ..the mutts were always the better behaved and more intelligent. I've always found purebreds to be...
Yes, just as with humans, some are most definitely smarter than others. :-) I got lucky in the respect that my roo is of a higher intelligence. In fact, so intelligent, that he figured out how to slide the lock and get out of the dog crate! He was quite proud of this accomplishment, and strutted...
Hello everyone! Sorry I wandered off for so long, but I had some computer issues and going online just wasn't worth the aggravation. Anyhoo, I just thought I'd pop in and give anyone who may be interested an update on my feisty boy.
I agree with the above posters who say how much they have...
I will post a pic of him asap, although at the moment, I have no way to upload pictures! Sorry for the delayed response, as I have been spending every free moment reading of chicken ailments and medicines! It's quite horrifying really, ..and the equivalent of a human going to WebMD, reading of...
This is one thing my roo has never done. He has always been a gentleman to the hens, protecting them, and even waiting for them to squat for him instead of ravaging them as some roosters do. He IS quite bossy and possessive though, herds them around the yard, and also has a jealousy issue...
This morning he is crowing, sounds clear as a bell, and is acting absolutely fine. Yes, I will carry on with the meds because I have no idea what else to do. I hate to give them medicine when I don't know what's wrong, ..but.. I guess the second round of worming will not hurt them any. Do I...
I don't know. There is no discharge from the eyes, nose or mouth, and I have not seen any breathing issues from any of them, ..until this incident today with the rooster.
Yes, I have checked the crop, and it seems fine as far as I tell.
Everything I read about gapeworm, my roo has every...
I saw no worm, and his tongue was sticking while he was doing this gaping thing.
Yes, I saw that about the Ivermectin, but the majority of the chicken people say the Levasole is the fastest acting and best choice. Idk. What do I know? Obviously not nearly enough! I now have most every med...
Scratch the post where I thought he was well, ..he is not! I'm almost certain now that he has gapeworm. I saw him doing that yawn thing again, and when I picked him up he was gasping, stretching his throat, and I heard a gurgling sound...almost a sound like something going down the drain.
I've...
As of last Wednesday, my roo has seemingly made a full recovery and is back to his feisty self. Thanks to all here for your help and well wishes, and those who PM'd me with their knowledge and advice! I still have no idea what was actually wrong with him, ..and I now have most every (unopened)...
btw, ..for those trying to help me figure out what is wrong with my roo, ..no crow from him this morning. :( Yesterday evening while observing him, I noticed he made this yawning motion, ..only it was not a regular yawn. More like he was stretching his throat or something, ..and he did this 7/8...
