Partially covered run— best litter method

I also add kitchen scraps (minus meat) for the chickens to eat and then work into the litter what they don't eat. If it is yard "waste" it goes in the run (cut grass, weeds, leaves, animal eaten veggies).

Partially covered run— best litter method

My guess is that you need a greater variety of material for your litter. Think about what the forest floor looks like and imitate that. There are leaves and plants and fallen tree branches and bark. There are all different types of organic material. I need to add more leaves to mine, but I...

    Suitable Grounding for Coop

Do a search for deep litter here. I use pine shavings, leaves, and hay in my coop. I sometimes add some mulch. I then rake it out to the coop after about 6 months. I don't purchase my mulch, but I get it free from tree trimming services.

    VERY muddy run, please help

I would do deep litter there. I would try to get a couple loads delivered now and slowly start adding it, or if you can take down a side and the dump truck can get it back there, have them put it right in, less work for you. I am a newbie, however and I know many people do not use fresh wood...

Dust bath - How big does it need to be?

I also use an old tire. Drilled holes in the bottom and filled it with sand and ash from the fire pit. We need to add to it somewhat regularly, but they have also dug down. It is a good place for them. It is on the sunny side of the run and not on the low point.

    I started fermenting!!!!!

I think fermented feed has a strong smell. I hate the smell, but I have a super sniffer, so I am much more sensitive to it. To me, it smells like it should, fermented feed. I ferment in the garage. I love feeding fermented food for all the reasons listed previously.

    Hoop coop questions

I bought cheap white tarps from Menards. I think I spent about $10. Our run is 24 feet long. I love my hoop run. It is great. We have a coop attached to it, but one day, we may add another hoop and make it into a run. I need to see how to do that and how many it would hold. We put...

    Need advice for dust bath

I used an old tire. They seem to have made more as needed. The do love the old tire filled with old bedding (from their chick days) that has a lot of spilled feed in it, ash from the fire pit and some sand.

Do I want a hoop coop?

I live in Iowa and we built a hoop run and attached it to the coop. We got a free old smoke house (their grandma would smoke in the playhouse) and converted it to a coop. It is smaller than I would prefer, but we plan to let the chickens run in the run in the winter. I have thought about...

    Neighbors Crowded Coop and run

If you presented more than one complaint, they may have only heard the rooster complaint and not even heard the complaint about the coop. It is likely not disrespect at all. Most chicken owners want to be good neighbors and will go above and beyond to make sure they are good neighbors.
