@Nabiki thanks for your reply. This morning when I went out to the aviary this particular rooster started to attack me - flying at my hands and pecking me as I moved around. I have never had quail so territorial and aggressive before . So far he hasn’t attacked the others. I will give him...
Does the frequency of crowing for males diminish as they grow older? So if one male seems to crow quite regularly, will he ”settle” down and crow less? Or is it once noisy, always noisy? He is 1 of 4 quail that ai hatched. One is a definite hen (spots on her chest). One just recently...
@le_bwah do you find that the broodies get territorial? I just introduced 3wk old chicks into the main aviary and the other hens (who are laying) leave them alone. But one hen who I think is broody (she’s not laying) has been chasing them and giving them a peck occasionally. No blood though...
No. Thought about snakes but they don’t have arms? I thought about cats, but the tunnels were rat size. No raccoons. No weasels. So process of elimination left me with rats.
I lost a whole lot to a rat(s). I had a similar set up. With hardwire floors. The rat grabbed the quail legs through the wire and amputated them one night. The blocks/bricks by the edges of the cage set up that I keep adding to block off holes dug didn’t work. I had to cull the lot of them...

this is helpful. But yes you need a good light source and dark room.
Have you had problems with the chicks getting entangled in her fluff? My Silkie hatched some quail for me and she was a fantastic mom but she squished a few and there were a few that got stuck on her feathers and they died. Interested to know how yours fared?
Hmm…did the person who sold you these sex them (vent) before selling them to you? The bulk of them can’t be feather sexed. I will leave it to the experts here to help you.
I bought these plastic ones over eBay a while back. You can actually just slot the plastic white bit through the wire and have the bottle hang outside. I can’t with this set up because of the plastic tray section of the cage (it would be too high for the quail to access). But it’s the one...
Nope. Chickens are worse than quail. They will rip everything out. I put some fake plant leaves in there for the moment for the quail. Upturned pots on their sides with sugarcane mulch in it and they love it. Tree stumps. They pretty much stay on the ground. They are so cute. Much easier than...
In Sydney. So 10km radius is the limit due to lockdown. Not keen on having the eggs delivered because AusPost has been slow in delivering parcels of late. Will just have to wait it out.
The aviary is looking real nice. Love the greenery. I haven’t planted anything in mine yet. Just around...
For eggs. But I think I will keep breeding them to keep the flock going. They don’t live long compared to chickens. I have to work out some sort of breeding program to introduce new birds into the mix. Currently because of lock down I can only source them from one breeder locally. So I am...
No mesh on the ground but there’s a wire skirt around the whole enclosure to stop predators getting in. They seem to like it. And I do too. I can walk in and rake occasionally. They are 7 weeks old. None of them are easy to feather sex so I am waiting to hear crowing. So far none yet. So...
This is Bag End. So far home to 4 “hobbit quail” (unsure of their sex) Bilbo, Frodo, Merry and Pippin. It used to be the chicken run but now they have run of the backyard.
