Wanting to get rabbits any tips???

If your aim is for meat rabbits, I would not mix the Flemish with the New Zealands. The Flemish Giants are very large rabbits, but the bone to meat ratio is very poor as is the food to meat conversion rate. The New Zealand breed has been a specialized meat breed for a very long time. It has...

Ohioans- where do you buy your organic or high quality feed?

The area between Dayton and Columbus covers a lot of ground. I am in the northern section of that area. Have you considered Hubbard or Kent feeds? We used the Hubbard FastGrow for our meat birds, but have also heard good things about their Layer feed. Around here it can be purchased at...

West Central Ohio Poultry Club 3rd Annual DOUBLE Show & Sale -- March 14,15,16 2014

I was just looking at the registration form on your site. Does the $5 entry fee cover both shows or is it $5 per bird per show? I apologize if I missed the answer to that in the documentation but didn't see it. Thanks

    4-H Showing

For showing in 4-H, I always recommend starting out by contacting your county's Extension Office to find out what requirements your county has for showing. The reason I suggest this is that in some counties you can show mixed breed birds, while in other counties your birds must be of a breed...

    4-H?

It would be best to check with your local extension office/4-H coordinator. The reason I say this is that the requirements vary state-to-state and county-to-county. Good Luck! Roger

We hatched 9 more Quail chicks over the weekend. My son is very excited about these. We cleaned up the incubator and set 7 more eggs on Sunday. There are now 3 Lavendar d'Anver, and 4 OEGB eggs cooking. Can't wait for the Lavendar's to hatch.

    Recommendation for 4h

Jeff, Something I recommend (you may have already done this) is to contact your county extension office to make sure what you need for showing in your county 4H program. In some counties you can show individual birds, some pairs, and in some, like ours, you have to show in trios. This will...

    Help! Neighbors are complaining!

As others have stated, have a conversation with the neighbor. Maybe you can work something out. I would also recommend checking out not only your covenants, but also state law. Here is why I suggest that. The community I live in does not allow "livestock"; however, the community does not...

We've been have alot of weird weather here in Ohio too. Temps were in the 60's the past two days and today the high is supposed to be 27. Getting lots of rain too. Fortunately, the kids and birds are handling it better than me. I've been fighting a bad cold and bronchitis for about 4 weeks...

We looked over 4 of the self blue cockerels that he had shown there. He said 3 of them placed, but we found a younger one that he thought was better so that is the one we bought.

He doesn't have any Quail now. He said he is primarily just working with the Self Blues, Blacks, and Blues. He is starting to work with some Splash and Mottleds too.

Here they are on the way home. (The picture was taken while we were sitting in a parking lot, but they did ride this way over an hour.) And then of course he had to come in the house so everyone could see him. Roger

Glad to see things still moving along. Congrats to JJ and Aubrey on the Crele. Those are some sharp looking birds. We've had some d'Anver changes here. The Lavendar cockerel that we picked up as part of a trio last August died a couple months ago. We have no idea why though. None of the...

Like I really need to get into more breeding. We have been raising rabbits for about 8-9 years now with my daughter raising Mini Rex and my son raising Netherland Dwarfs. The two breeds with the most varieties currently. I get in enough trouble with my wife over breeding them. Now to get...

Bad thing is, now with two different varities of d'Anver, I was looking at the Chicken Calculator to see what would happen if we crossed the Lavenders and the Quail. Cool we get Blacks. What if we then breed the Blacks together? Wow!!! A lot of different varieties could pop out. Hhhmmmm...

KristenR, Wow! Thank you for a very detailed review!!! Your in depth details will help when evaluating the other d'Anvers we have and will be getting. I have read through the Standard a few times, but a lot of it I didn't really understand. Your information helps with that. We got these...

Here is a pic of my son and his new roo'. This wasn't the picture I was hoping for but still cute. Just before I got the camera, Nick had his head down on the table and the roo' was laying on his wrist with it's head against Nick's.
