Thank you! It looks like we had 7 out of 9 hatch that made it to lockdown. The last one to hatch is still a little wet so I’ll give them a little more time to dry out before placing them in the brooder.
The last two are olive eggs and hard to candle other than knowing they both had air sacs. If...
He/she finally hatched, but it looks like there were membranes, maybe a little yolk(?)and egg shell from his/her bottom area. That fell off after a few minutes. One of his/her toes is flesh colored... Is this a normal variant? Anything I need to be concerned about? Poor thing had a tough hatch...
I
I candled at day 7,10,14 and 18. They are shipped olive egger eggs from cackle hatchery. I did not pencil the air sac until the last candle at the start of day 18
I have resisted opening the incubator since other eggs are still hatching. It’s so hard to watch and not help. I did not see it pip before the four hatched. Ever since then, the hatched chicks are playing dodge ball with the unhatched eggs 😩
Thank you so much! The chicks did roll it once into the pip hole and I was able to flip it back over by briefly putting sanitary plastic tubing through one of the big air holes in the incubator to flip it back over.
Help please! This is our first time hatching chicks without a broody hen to do the work for us. The chicks that have hatched this morning rolled this egg aground and it looks like the chick is malpositioned and pipped the side of the egg, not into the air sac. It is still breathing and trying to...
This is our first time hatching chicks with an incubator since we do not have a broody hen. One of the chicks is not in the correct position, but has pipped through the membrane and is still breathing. What should I do? Thank you in advance for helping...
My oldest hen is being bullied by a few of our other hens and our rooster. She is now staying inside the coop all the time unless we go out there to be near her for protection. There has not been any blood, but they have pulled out all of her neck feathers and she is being chased away from food...
Great ideas! We just received HOA approval to fence our 2 acre backyard. I would love to let him free range eventually. We have two dogs that are great for hawk protection and when the dogs bark, all the chickens run for cover when we are out with them. In the meantime, we have the large dog...
Great suggestions for the nesting boxes for privacy. We have considered building a larger coop and attaching it to the run and then using the old coop as a separate broody area for hens with babies. They still cram on two roosting bars at night as is and leave the third completely unused. We...
You have a fantastic eye from a blurry shot. I went back out to look and sure enough, Lola has a bloodied comb. It looks clotted. I can see one other girl with a bloodied comb as well, also clotted and not as obvious as Lola’s.
Do I need to keep those girls separated so no further pecking...
We have a 12x32’ covered run that is accessible from sun up until they go in to roost at night and a coop with three roosting bars (they usually leave the bottom one unoccupied) and four nesting boxes for nine girls and one boy. We also have many roosting spaces in the run with lots of space to...
Thank you for the advice. It is cold here with highs in the 30-40’s and lows in the teens. Two of the nesting boxes never get used by the girls, but all four on opposite sides of the coop had blood, even the two without any eggs in them. We will definitely check the combs in the morning. We do...
