    Hen Attacked - missing eye

My poor sweet Buff Brahma Pat is always being beat up by the other chickens, so I keep her isolated with a couple of others sweet hens. Today my rooster, Poppy, flew out of the big pen and attacked Pat taking out one of her eyes (blood and vitreous fluid coming out). I have eggs boiling and a...

anymore guesses now that they are older? I have someone coming to look at them this weekend. One lady definitely wants 2 pullets, the other lady and the guy don't really seem to care. I'll probably end up just keeping my broody hens chicks. ( I bought 2 chicks today that the feedstore had...

Up for the challenge? Gender....new pics

ok... they'll be 5 weeks this Sunday. There are an awful lot of pretty tail feathers..... but I'm still hoping for a few pullets! The barred rock impersonator Red - one of my favorites. Does it look like hackle feathers to you? Remember the little runt? I have fallen for this one. Pic...

Up for the challenge? Gender....new pics

These chicks are mutts and not quite 3 weeks old, so they may be too young. They sure have pretty tail feathers though Daddy is a white EE, the hens would be either: BR, Brahma, JG, Golden Comet, RIR, BO. Check out the green legs on some of them - they can't deny their Easter Egger daddy...

Husband is really going to kill me over my chicken math skills!!!

Early spring last year I thought it would be fun to have 3 hens to scratch around in my garden for me and the eggs were just bonuses. I researched and read here at BYC and selected the breeds I wanted - BO, BR and EEs. Then I decided I needed 2 of each, so I was up to 6. It was around...

    Updated chick pics :)

My EE Roo is white and black as well. He is beautiful (except his bald butt where he flew over the fence and the dog got him) and very sweet. He minds his own business and just watches over the hens. He does beat up my buff brahma, Pat, though. Seriously tries to kill her, so she is in isolation...

Awesome! All of the white EE's I have seen here at BYC (with maybe 1 exception) have been roos. My Roo is a white EE. I do not want another roo. LOL The BR is just from a BR hen, the Roo for all of them was my Big Poppy, white EE. I do love the markings on some of them! I didn't get a close...

question about "lock down" - Brooder baby pic

So now there are a total of 9 chicks if I counted the squirming masses right. There are 2 more zipped. I took 2 and put them in the brooder, the others are still soaking wet (even the ones from yesterday morning???). Should I take them out and wrap them up or dry them or something?

Just came in from work to find 2 more chicks and 4 pips, one zipping along. One of the new chicks is black and is so tiny it could nearly be a bantam! Of course, it is also brand new and really wet...... No staying up all night tonight, it doesn't seem to go nearly as slow when I am not...
