Good looking birds! Smart way to break down the compost.
I pulled up all the worn out tomato plants in the lower garden, picked off the green tomatoes and threw the vines into the woods. Also got all the old cucumber vines removed from the trellis and fed to the chickens.
When I was a kid we just drained oil out of the pan onto the gravel driveway and covered it over with rocks and dust. The city sprayed the gravel road with oil every summer.
I still wash gently used plastic freezer bags at times, or if they're clean (like filled with frozen whole tomatoes) I'll...
The row of garlic along the south side of the raised has always been smaller and struggled. It dawned on me today that it's probably because the black metal sides of the bed get extremely hot in the sun, stressing the roots and drying the soil. I'm going to place a wooden board along that side...
I marked mine with something along those lines. I do know that most of the cloves I planted this year are quite a bit larger than last year's cloves so I think I'll have a better crop next summer.
This is the fourth planting of garlic I saved from a single small bag of Home Depot garlic. It...
I got sidetracked from my gardening plans. I noticed the garlic heads I saved for planting and decided to break them up, sort them and plant them in the garden.
I got 90 good sized cloves for planting and another 1/2 cup or so of cloves for eating from 13 heads.
I used a 6 inch wide board...
Grandpa brushed used motor oil on all his farm implements so they wouldn't rust sitting out in the weather over the winter. Plows, disks and that sort of thing. Seemed to work pretty well and the price was right.
I picked maybe the last 5 cucumbers of the season and started removing vines from the first planting of cucumbers this morning and gave them to the chickens. I'm going to try removing the rest of them today.
I believe I'll make dill pickle chunks from all the cucumbers I have and just keep...
Nice looking cockerel! Good luck with whichever way it goes.
Mine started crowing late this morning, I think it was around 5AM. Before long I think I'll be able to sleep right through his wakeup calls.
I have no idea. My cockerels are 22 or 23 weeks old now and one of them started crowing a couple weeks ago. Only very early some mornings for 5 or 10 minutes, then he shuts up completely for the rest of the day without a peep, errr, crow.
But now his brother has started testing his voice. He...
The garden is winding down for the most part. My fall bush beans are going to start blooming in a few days and I hope they have time to make beans.
The tomatoes in the new garden plot are about shot. I'll pick all the green tomatoes for green salsa.
Peppers are looking better than the...
Update on the butternut squash that grew on my pallet chicken run compost bin. It was a success! I had to water it regularly first part of the season, but later on the squash didn't need much watering. And I didn't fertilize at all.
I suspect that the roots went all through the compost pile and...
My follow up appointment after my shoulder MRI went ok I guess. She said the torn bicep and rotator cuff injuries seem to have happened prior to my accident, so physical therapy might make an improvement. And that repair surgery probably wouldn't work.
I also got a cortisone shot in my...
My garden is looking happy because of the rain, but I'm going to need to spray BT on my brassicas. Cabbage worms are eating holes in the leaves.
I'm hoping my late crop of green beans does something. Right now I think they're close to blooming.
My walking onions are all sprouting. Thanks @Sally PB !
I pulled a baker's dozen of garlic heads out of the shop and will start separating them tomorrow to get the biggest cloves for planting. I'm thinking 80 should be enough.
