I think you've got a good idea there. I've processed my own Marans, and the meat is incredible. (there is a place in Manteca where you can take them to be processed) I'm also fond of game birds, and they are so docile, tuff, lay good and are good broodies. Good luck in your venture. If I...
I had a feeling it was Merek's when you first posted. I'm sorry this is happening, it's so hard to take.
Is her comb and face pale? Are her eyes the right color? Has she regained any of her mobility?
First off..
I'm so sorry for your loss.. I know how hard that is to take.. I can't imagine how the kids are taking it! So sad!
Maby you can ask around the local farmers, check Craigslist.. for a laying hen or two.. For me, hens are much easier to integrate if there is no roo.. it's not...

BARNEVELDERS
The breed was originated in the district of Barneveld, Holland with the brown egs as one of the chief attractions. At first the birds were of mixed markings, some being double laced, others the single partridge pattern. Two varieties were...
I bought the Brinsea thermometer with the probe thinking it was better than the cheapie Walmart thermometer/hygrometer... that wasn't the case..
I came to the conclusion that it's near impossible to really know the exact temp..
I put the cheapie in there.. got the temp fairly close... marked...
Edited to add... Barnevelder pullets do not have gold/brown/rust in the hackles... they are black.. they come in black and stay black. Partridge Rocks have gold/brown/rust in the hackles..

I'm sorry.. I have hesitated to post on this thread, cause I really don't know what's goin on with that color pattern! I was curious.. but couldn't really add anything to the mix... till now.
Here is a pic of a Barnevelder pullet from my pair..
I have another one outside that was given to me...
I have read that pullet embryos are more sensitive to temp changes and either don't develop or don't hatch as a result.. hence the reason all my first hatches were mostly roos.. I believe a steady temp will help roo to pullet ratio... (we all strive for perfect temps..I'm sure!)
I can't speak...
Congratulations Mrs. Glassman!!!
A friend of mine was telling me that his uncle has 3 broody hens.. One he took in the house cause it was so hot outside.. and she was on some very high dollar eggs.. Several of them hatched.. and she got up and was feeding the babiez... So he took them...
