What did you use on your pop door?

I used two small blocks of plastic chopping board with a hole drilled through each block, lined up to the hole in the coop wall, put a small section of a plastic tube through the coop wall and connect the two blocks on either side. This serves as an alternate to a pulley system which works with...

Welding Rebar frame for coop or run

Our 4' x 6' x 6' high chicken run is made with welded 3/4" dia. galvanized steel tubing (from Home Depot). It is very sturdy and light weight. My husband and my teenage son and daughter did the tube cutting and welding (with welding masks on), I did the painting. I moved this run in place by...

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

It is really cold out and will get colder, but have you ever have a lap chicken? Mine will fall asleep on my lap and her underside feels like a heating pad. I can feel the burning heat through my pants like a ball of fire, and that was last night. While I was working on the computer, she dozed...

    Snowstorms and freezing temps

Couldn't get out to the coop today, didn't even try during the blizzard. We have been watching them from the house, the chickens hung out in the shielded run all day, doing their things, then went to inside the coop shortly after 3 PM, probably called it an early night. There is an insulated...

Easy to peel FRESH LAID hard boiled eggs!

Cook in boiling water works like wonder, not even needing to saok the eggs in ice water afterwards. I suspect that the egg shell crack a little when gently placed in boiling water, forcing a gap between the rapidly cooked egg and the shell, thus very easy to remove the shell.

Dealing with this blizzard.... keep them inside?

Blizzard in session here, too, but the chickens are hanging out in the run as usual because the pop door is open 24/7. They have a few days worth of food in the run, and hopefully, the heated insulated water bucket is working. Our run is shielded with plastic panels during the winter, so our...

To build a coop or not to build? Requesting advice!

My 4' x 4' coop and the 4' x 6' run comes apart easily in case we have to move them. The heaviest part of the coop was the asphalt shingle roof with skylight. Worst come to worst, the entire roof panel can be removed and the coop can be stripped down to the frame. Take a look at my coop page for...

    coop ramp

Example of a ramp with randomly placed cleats, so the chickens can pick and choose their grips. You can prop a crate at the end to reduce the slope. Adjust the slope of the ramp as the chickens get older and stronger to climb up and down.

    Help choosing a new coop....

Now that I have chickens for a year and a half, know a lot more about what qualified as a good coop design, I haven't seen a single pre-fab chicken coop on the market that would make me say "WOW, I wish I have that". On the other hand, when I browse through the "Coops" page on this forum...

What would be the Best ground cover for a chicken run

Hilo, HI is extremely wet and humid. I have been there twice, and my son lived there last summer. He said even his coins were rusting. It is probably one of the wettest places in US with the highest annual rainfall. So if I were you, I would not use sand, because the chicken poop would just...

Keeping chickens in - the saga

Continue to get off the topic....it sounds like you having more of a human crisis than chickens crisis. Black mold indoor is definitely a health hazard. Icicles in the attic is for sure a sign of roof leak. Not to make you more nervous, but some weather prediction is calling for a nasty winter...
