You could certainly try to see if your Broody hen will adopt them. I've got some 7 week old chicks hatched by a broody bantam hen and just last week at 7 weeks she has started to make the chicks go off on their own so to speak. They are large fowl, not bantams, and they are holding their own...
Well, the chicks won't stay still when I try to take pictures but they seem to like when I video. So here is a link to a video of them at 7 weeks of age.
(And yes, I admit I got a bit carried away with the video. Hubby said I must be the only woman who makes videos of her chickens. I told...
At the TSC Swap, is it such that we can bring pullets and cockrels that we've hatched to sell or swap? I have a couple 7wk old Easter Eggers I need to rehome. [DH says I've got too many. Like that's a bad thing? :-)]
I looked up the Lees Summit website and the Chicken Ordinance is going to the city council this week! Thursday July 11th - council meeting starts at 6:15pm. It's #4 on the agenda. Lets all keep our fingers toes and wings crossed that the council votes in favor of the proposed ordinances so hens...
Well 2 out of 5 being pullets is pretty good. I'm pretty certain #2 is a roo...at least if comb color and size is any indication. Sad thing is he is so friendly...maybe that's a give-away? I'm hoping it becomes more apparent who is what before any crowing starts. (My neighbors might not like...
Well if 'sparring' (when chicks kick their feet up at each other to fight) is any indication, I think #1, 2 & 4 (Beauty, Candy & Peace) are Roos. I've noticed they all seem 'bulkier' or larger than the other two chicks. Additionally I caught Candy jumping on top of chick #3 (Ketchup). :(
I'm...
We had a friend who wanted to add the blue egg genetics to her flock. She wasn't concerned with whether she got a hen or a rooster since she has a mix of chicks already. So we rehomed #6. Chick and new owner are doing good. :)
Hello again everyone, here are my mystery chicks at 5 weeks of age.
This is chick #1 - my daughter has named her/him 'Beauty'. I'm thinking this one is a roo because of how pink the comb is compared to the others.
This is chick #2 - daughter named him/her 'Candy'. From its...
Thank you Ridgerunner! I wasn't sure if it was safe to clip a chicks wings or not. I understand and have clipped my bantams so I know you only cut back so far. I wasn't sure if it was the same with chicks. They have a huge backyard with flowers, shrubs and mulch to scratch, peck, hide and play...
Unfortunately I'm gonna have to figure out something because for the second time this week the same chick got over our 5 ft privacy fence and stuck in the neighbors backyard. :(
They're routinely getting over the 3ft garden fence, but I can tolerate that since it is still in our yard.
I think...
Ok, I did some searching on the forum and there is a string titled 'How early do you clip chick wings?' That seems to answer this: they must have their adult feathers and that happens around 8 weeks. :( so I've got 4 more weeks to go. So far they can get about 3 ft off the ground. I'm hoping...
I feed grower and scratch to my hens and chicks. I tend to hand feed the scratch to help avoid them eating all scratch and nothing else AND it helps to get them tamer and used to me. I also have layer feed in a higher feeder that the hens can reach but not the chicks. They all free range too...
I have five Auracona/EE chicks that are 4 weeks old and are VERY flighty. Are they old enough that I could clip one side of their wings? I clip my bantams so they won't fly, but have not clipped a chicks wings and don't want to hurt them.
I'll try to get more pics - side views. Just curious, since I'm still learning...what specifically do you see in #5 & 6 that make you think they're Roos? Is it the comb color, shape, size? (I ask because I haven't a clue!) Thanks!:)
I looked up the LSMO government website and the next meeting on changing the ordinance is 6/19 at 6pm. The local cable station televises the meeting if you're interested in watching it. The website has packet they'll be reviewing with the revised proposed ordinance. Overall looks...
Thanks for all the replies! I understand its really early and it's supposed to be harder to tell the gender in this breed. So I'm just looking for guesses. Does anyone know if the roo vs hen tell-tale signs are pretty accurate at an age prior to crowing or egg laying? (I'm in the suburbs and...
Hi Everyone, this Friday 6/14 my 6 chicks will turn 3 weeks. The lady I got the eggs from said they're pure Araucanas and the eggs they hatched out of were all blue. I'm not really worried if they're Araucanas or EEs, etc...just more concerned with the blue egg color. But this way you have...
Well, low and behold, non-broody turned out to be not broody...good think I checked 30 minutes after my last post. But all went well. Out of an original 10 eggs, we have 7 happy healthy chicks!. (Mamma hen kicked one egg out of the nest, one egg didn't hatch and one poor chick #8 didn't make...
