Thanks for playing another one of these games 😆
3 weeks old.
Brahma x Isa Brown.
All same size, no difference in legs.
I'm guessing
#1 Pullet
#2 and #3 Roo
Or do I have 3 little roos???
Chick #2 and #3 seem to have red leakage or is it too early too tell their final feather colouring?
Hi. Could you sex them as day olds? A breeder was telling me she could tell apart the difference due to chick colour at birth, but I couldn't find any online sources confirming that.
Mine have a small little secure run under their coop, with food and water available. So at first light, they come out of their 'coop' where they roost, but stay in the run until I'm ready to let them out. 8am on workdays, around 9am (sometimes later!) on others. I've sighted foxes as late as 9am...
Thanks again, everyone, for the advice!
Here's an update of them all resting together, all's being going well for the past week and hopefully will end well.
I've observed for a couple more days as the bigger issue was the chicks being separated from mum as they didn't know where to flee. But as...
Week 1 completed!
Exploring daily in the garden now, but I am still supervising them as they are easily separated from mum, and the magpies in my garden were eyeing them.
I know now feather sexing and pea combs rows aren't relevant to these mix breed chicks. But I'm still documenting them to...
I use hemp in my coop and nesting boxes, and that's where my baby chicks are with the mama hen. She tidbits them to eat crumbles off the floor and I do see them sometimes picking hemp up. They are less than a week old. I will update here if there are any issues. 🤞
Thank you, I am telling myself not to step in, too. But I posted here because I saw her pick one up and fling it, which I read somewhere was violence. I thought the mama hen would snap then for sure, but she only bokked louder to gather her chicks closer to her. Would you recommend I still only...
Thanks, yes, she is a newbie (so am I).
I don't want to lock away #3 because she's neurotic (long story lol), but I will definitely keep an eye until I'm confident the chicks know where to run.
Hi, hope the more seasoned chicken rearers can help me with deciding if my mother hen is protective enough.
I have a hen with 4-day old chicks. She is the unchallenged boss of my little flock, rather mean. I have two other hens #2 and #3 (numbered equal to their pecking order).
The mother hen...
Here's the chicks on Day 3.
I think I am getting the hang of differentiating them!
38 degree summer day, but coop was well shaded. The mama hen requested to come out this evening so I decided to take the plunge and let her free range again.
My two other hens didn't approach the chicks, except...
Thanks, NatJ! What colour would you call my chicks' down? I'd like to read up more on it.
What do you think of chicks' personalities as an indicator? If that's accurate at all, I definitely have two little roosters who come running towards my hand.🥲🥲
3 little eggs hatched under my broody yesterday, they are Dark Brahma rooster x Isa Brown hen (what a mix, not my idea). Want to follow the colour/gender guesses? 😄
I read in another post on this forum that this is the colour they could be:
I do have 3 yellow/buff/cream chicks but the lady...
Just an update for everyone and those who might be searching the forum for a similar issue.
- Though I started with calcium supplements first, my pullet was looking sicker everyday, so I started her on the antibiotics I had.
- She became better and seemed to have recovered completely (super...

Thank you, it's Day 2 now of calcium supplements. I only have calcium carbonate but I will get my hands on calcium citrate over the weekend.
Hen is very active, and I saw an egg membrane in the coop so she is def laying shell-less eggs.
Sorry for the poop pic - I've...
