Cochins - (bantams) Where's the boy? Is there one?

Oh, @TheChickenGirl16 , I believe KateWalker is actually the layer. Whomever, this was the first egg! Thought it was a rock, but too lightweight 🙃

Cochins - (bantams) Where's the boy? Is there one?

Thanks for your expertise. I only got a couple of glimpses at the banded chick, and I've always thought it was mis-identified. They were shipped to El Paso TX in May with a heat pack, and missed the DAILY truck to my town by an hour. They spent 23 hours at a USPS hub. Dehydration, heat...

Sexing Mottled Cochin Bantam (15wks Old)

Oh my. I had to do a double-take. Our flock from MPC at 4.5 weeks. Dirt-bath time. And the cochins at 12 wks

    Unique chick?

What a precious baby - please post updates? I currently have 2 buff orpington mixes (BO roo, silver leghorn or game hen, and 2 black sexlinks that all lay eggs that color:confused:

Cochins - (bantams) Where's the boy? Is there one?

...but with triple-digits this summer, our misting system has caused some feather shredding. If I mislabeled anyone, KateWalker has almost no white on the back or bustle (tail pouf), Pickles has most mottling on the back, and JustYou has more tail mottling. *Edit - going to get better Pickles...

The gene-spliced breeds are not good backyard chickens

These Buckeye observations are based on 3 birds. 2 from a hatchery, one fron TSC. FOOD DRIVEN. Holy cow, these girls love food. Great layers, nice big eggs. And sweet! Friendly, cause they're always checking for snacks. We raised the 2 hatchery girls in a mixed flock from the same hatchery...

    TSC Bantam mix - Breeds

Not at all!! You just gave another excuse to take pictures😁. I do want to apologize- I saw your post on Tuesday - and did not intend to take so long to reply. I did get pictures!!! In my first post, 1, 4, and 6 are OEG. 1 roo & 2 girls and they are TINY. The standard size hen-floofy-butt in...

How many cockerels do you count?

#1, the porcelain d'uccle, had that comb at three weeks, and he crowed 2 days ago. He was supposed to be a girl. #s 3 & 4, the Mille fleur d'uccles, are as they should be, 1 of each, and the cochin ? There's a third that isn't in the picture. Our current guesses are 2 boys 1 girl, but I want to...

How many cockerels do you count?

These bantams are not quite 7 weeks old - we've been 'discussing' this since I took the pics. 2 mottled cochin, 2 mille fleur, and 1 porcelain d'uccles. 1 has crowed (twice). This is kinda just for fun - I know the picks aren't the best. This is how I spend Saturday nights.

    Male or female

We've raised 4 sets if babies since March, and ALL of them (roos, pullets, and some unknowns) at some point will chest bump & practice kicking. Some females will gradually slow down on that, but some are pretty spicy! I think it's pretty normal chick behavior. As for sexing, it depends on...

How old, and what breed, if you know. Hatchery, farm store or private stock?

Is it normal for Turkens to be this large at 4 weeks?

Thanks - I've gotten a lot of feedback, and done a ton of research. Even if they are Pioneers, those have been crossed, and bred to have stronger bones & legs, and develop more slowly, and be strong enough to continue to mature and lay and breed. An actual pioneer person (or homesteader)...

    Oddly textured, thin shelled eggs

Thank you. She's always been healthy, and Jason (my partner in chicken madness, codependently supporting each other's chicken math) loves his Houdans, and spots everything. It has happened before, as recently as 2 weeks ago, and last spring when we thought squirrels were breaking/stealing eggs...

    Oddly textured, thin shelled eggs

...minutes, she was back to her normal self. And laid a 'normal' egg 2 days later and again today. I could easily give a detailed history:ducbut will *try* to spare you. The heavily rippled egg from the 3rd is not at all rough or sandy feeling, just smooth ripples. A light tap with a...

    12-13 week old layer?

I appreciate the replies so much. Gives me more confidence in my opinions. I've been learning, thanks to everyone here. All of ours are pets (Therapy Chickens), so we don't routinely cull. I'm often surprised by someone's egg (Stealth layers). Thanks again:)

    12-13 week old layer?

I have 6 pullets from TSC, that should now be 12 weeks old - we picked them up on 3/20: I actually believe we got what we wantedt; 1 BCM cockerel (crows), 1 Ancona cockerel (crows), 3 barred rock pullets, 2 black sex link pullets, and 1 Buckeye pullet. None have crowed, and the boys started...

    Mystery Bantam chick - breed?

And look how smart she is, showing a leg for me. Honestly, I hadn't consciously made the connection (sex link/production), but duh. Can't believe it didn't register. Too much chaos. We have 2wk(6), 3wk(7), 4wk(10), and 11wk(12) old flocks. Thanks for the help.

    Mystery Bantam chick - breed?

@ChickQueen77 I think you may be right, I ruled out OEGB because of the dark-washed legs & feet. But the wings..... I have 2 Black Sex Links that are almost 11 wks, (standards), and even at 1wk their wings were bigger (comparatively) than this little one's are at 2 weeks. I've only seen tiny...

Is it normal for Turkens to be this large at 4 weeks?

@SuspiciousChick, I too have 4 Turkens from TSC I'm watching. But what tickled me, is the fact that my nickname for TSC is The Suspicious Chick...:jumpy:highfive:
