I'm confused as to why people find the use of Cayenne difficult to accept.
Think about what happens to your mouth, stomach, or even just your skin if you put a bunch of cayenne on it. Take a really hot pepper and rub the juice on the inside of your wrist. If you leave it there you will get a...
I have a little White Chantecler that seems to have a slipped tendon.
Has anyone tried to put a tendon back?
I tried it this morning. Can't tell if it stayed back though. I can feel the tendon along the side of the leg. I gently straightened the leg out then tried to "roll" it over onto the...
Personally I think it all comes down to how you plan on cooking them. If you roast all of your birds then take the time to pluck them. but if you do stir fry or sauces and other wet styles of cooking then skin them out. I will only skin if I do one or two birds at a time. I like to do stir fry...
As an initial trial I did the same basic thing that Saritastar suggested. Only difference was that I used wire mesh to separate them. I doesn't burn and allows the heat to go all the way down and threw the two sides evenly. It seemed to work perfectly. It is simple and cheap. I used some scrap...
Give the 3 wk olds a hover to keep warm in.
Basically you can simulate the warm blanket effect of a hen.
Put something in the brooder at one end that gives them something insulated to walk under and keep warm using each others body heat. If you feed them well and give them a little hover they...
Thank you Kathy.
I will keep an eye on it.
Got to see how they are once I get them out of quarantine and into a proper run. Right now they are in a small tractor that makes it hard to take pictures.
I don't have a copy of the standard. That is something that I will need to look for soon.
These...
I finally got my flocks started.
Picked up a trio of Buff on Sunday, and placed 18 Partridge eggs in the Bator last Friday.
No way to know how the hatch will go but the trio is a good start for buffs.
Here's the Roo.
And a pic provided previously by the person I got them from.
I just put 18 Large Partridge egg in the bator last night. My first hatch of these. I had my test hatch work well with 6 mutts. 50% hatch rate even though I was very rough on them, 25% humidity that whole time. I'll try to take care of these ones. I need a good hatch. Next batch wont be until...
Hi again everyone. Hope things are going well.
I'll list myself finally.
I currently can only offer Dark Cornish as pure breeds. I only have a trio so the number of eggs is low. Really only enough for locals. As I increase the flock this will improve.
I will be able to offer a small number of...
Congrats ilovechickens!
I`m sure you will love them. I`m curious to see the Reds. Should interesting. The Blacks look nice in pics as well.
PurelyPoultry,
Let me know if you wish to be added to the database. I have not added any of the hatcheries yet. Those that breed their own and do not...
I am still waiting for mine to arrive.
This will be my first hatch of Chantecler. That is why I say that I will be working towards production.
Plans are in place. I just need the eggs to arrive.
That may be difficult depending on what you consider to be productive.
The original Chantecler was bred to lay up to 210 eggs per year. I doubt that you will find a strain that is reliable at that level, but I have never asked. There may be some around. You're going to have to be a little...
I have Cuckoo Marans and like them very much. I wish i had access to some nice Black Copper. Very nice birds. Great eggs. The darker the better for me, although it is very hard to candle the dark eggs.
According to the reading I have done, the original White Chantecler was bred to lay upwards of 210 eggs per year. This was of course in Quebec, taking into account the short and very cold winter days. No supplemental light or heat required. Only a dry place out of the wind and snow with good...
Any success Craig?
I hope the links will help. There are multiple people in your area that have small flocks. I wish I lived in an area as Chantecler rich as yours. I am almost the only person in my province right now that is interested in them.
Good luck.
I just finally read through this thread.
The slow maturing and beginning of egg laying does seem to be an issue in the Partridge and Buff types. I'm not sure about the whites.
The buff and partridge have not really been bred for production, not since they were first developed anyway. I'm...
Tim,
The struggle to find breeders is one of the reasons that I began thinking about this project. I have had difficulty finding breeders that were close to me, and I have a lot of contacts compared to most. It is a big problem for all rare breeds. I will try to get the list to RBC and CFI as...
