Peafowl in the Backyard – Beauty, Brains, or Both?

Consider using wiggle wire and channel for temporary installment of tarps. The same system used for high tunnels and green house plastic. Mid to high Hybrids, (Spaldings) will be fine in a good windbreak down to the teens for a short while without heat. High Hybrids should have some heat to...

Peafowl in the Backyard – Beauty, Brains, or Both?

Be sure to change out that metal roost for a flat wooden one before it gets cold. Cold metal and not being able to cover his toes will lead to frostbite.

    Male or Female?

I'd like to see a pic straight down from above but from this angle it appears to be an IBBS hen probably carrying a white gene of some sort.

    Peachick color?

Internet pictures are notorious for being off-color and coupled with being so young I will pass on the two chicks. The Purple hen is in molt and the light feathers are probably old sun-faded feathers that have not been replaced yet. Look for white under the chin and white on the outside...

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

I find it interesting that both of my emu like to be inside of the sheep barn, perhaps it is because they prefer sheep feed over what I was giving them. On a positive note they have seem to have settled down.

How to make a pen ready for youngsters...

Things I have done to 'clean' a dirt pen floor; use a weed burner and flame the dirt to kill microorganisms on the ground. You can spread agricultural powdered lime on the ground and lightly work it into the dirt and water it in. You can flame the dirt a second time and plant grass seed. The...

Advice needed - Head shaking in both 9 week old peachicks.

You can rule out worms as well since they haven't been outside on the dirt. There is some type of irritant in otherwise healthy chicks so I would look at the bedding. Watch closely at the skin just below the eyes to see if the skin puffs out with every breath, that would be an indication...

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

Peahens will lay an egg every second or third day until they have enough eggs to set. We see viability go down after ten days. So a clutch of ten eggs will be close to two or three weeks old. Do you know how often emu lay? Also peahens will lay the eggs scattered about but will gather them...

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

For now the hen is in a 30x100 meter paddock and Limu is in one about half that size. We intend to let them out into the ten acre pasture but will wait until they settle down and learn where food and shelter is as well as getting used to us. Perhaps after winter is over near the end of February.

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

I have messaged the person I got them from to get a hatch date because I am not sure what she meant by the term 'first season'. Ask me anything about bees or peacocks and I will have an answer but I know that every species will have their own peculiarities. Translating northern and southern...

    Our newest adventure, EMU's!

Mid-winter here is well below freezing every night, sometimes in the negative *F. How does the male keep the eggs from getting ruined in the cold? I am not really interested in producing a lot of chicks, maybe enough to offset the feed bill. What I am interested in is watching and interacting...
