She definitely has pin feathers coming in, so could be an early molt like you said. She looks awful, poor girl! Lice has been a problem with my flock this past spring, but I didn't see any evidence of lice on her. I gave her a dose of Nutri-drench and added it to the flock's water as well. I...
Thank you so much! We live in Central Florida, it's been raining like non-stop and there are no shortage of mosquitoes. I wonder why she's shedding so many feathers. Maybe from being sick?
This afternoon I noticed one of my Bielefelders hanging back from the others. Also I'd been noticing a lot of feathers in the roost when I'd clean it out for the last several days. When I picked her up, I noticed her comb looks very pale, bumpy, and scabby, and she is losing tons of feathers...
Thank you. I'm sorry for your loss as well. It was so sudden and unexpected. I've spent the last month nursing another injured chicken back to health, who has really made a surprising comeback, got her reintegrated, and was finally feeling like the flock would be in a nice healthy place after...
For anyone who might need the info in the future, here is a link to a state animal lab in central Florida where they will perform necropsies:

Thanks for the reply, and very relevant questions! They get a layer pellet feed and free range everyday, anywhere from a couple hours to all day. About once a week, they get something special like fresh cut squash or yogurt. I used to feed treats everyday- scratch, dried worms, dried veggie mix...
Ouch! Poor girl. Cleaning with Veterycin is good, followed by some antibiotic ointment. Blu Kote will keep other hens from picking at the wounds (they are attracted to the color red) but don't use it if the wounds are deep. You can also either purchase or sew a chicken apron to protect her back...
I got home from work today and let the girls out to free range until bedtime. They all rushed out as usual to start scratching and foraging. Then when I opened up the coop door to clean the poop board and gather eggs, I was shocked to find one of my Bielefelders dead on the poop board. It...
@KikisGirls Is that because Wazine is only effective against roundworms? Or is it not very effective against those either? I figured it was better to start something immediately.
Tractor Supply had Wazine 17, so I started them on that for 24 hrs. They also had the Safe Guard but giving each chicken a daily dose for several days was more trouble than I really want. I've already found one poop with more worms, so hopefully that's a good sign that Wazine is the right drug...
Here is a photo of poop from this morning:
I ordered some Valbazen online but will stop by tractor supply later this morning to see what they have. I also have Corid on hand so will start that as well. I'm wondering if I should switch her back to a starter/grower feed, since laying clearly...
I've been tending to injuries my Speckled Sussex sustained about 3 weeks ago, consisting of some deep gashes on her neck and back near her tail. I never figured out the cause (maybe a hawk?) but they were pretty significant. I've been pleasantly surprised at how well she's healing. I would say...
I would gently clean it more to help you figure out what the cause was. You can then apply some antibiotic ointment. Also, chickens are attracted to red, so having some Blu Kote on hand is a good idea, as that will serve as an antimicrobial and also mask any wounds from further pecking (warning-...
I love my Bielefelders! They are good layers, with large pink-brown eggs, big beautiful birds, and great temperaments! They love being petted, very friendly, and great around my 3 young kids.
Day 11 update:
Nugget (I figured she's earned a name after surviving all she has, and my hubby has a twisted sense of humor) is getting better, it seems. Her poop has been normal, she's out in the run every day scratching, her wounds are looking better, and she's quite feisty now when I am...
I was encouraged today when I got home and found my girl out in the little run scratching around. I'd noticed yesterday she was staying in the coop a lot more and was worried, so seeing her out and about made me happy. But I noticed her poop looking very liquid and green. I'm not sure what it...
Here is her back wound this morning:
It looks a bit better I think, so I used more betadine. I'll see how it's looking this afternoon when I get home from work, then switch over to hibiclens again.
