    Sexing chipmunk pattern chicks

It doesn't work with all the breeds. This chipmunk chick (golden salmon marans) is turning out to be a pretty and very obvious little boy, although the stripes at birth clearly indicated female...in theory only : The eyeliner was nice and dark and well defined too. So depending on what breed...

    Girls?

Can you get better pics of the saddle feathers? Something on the back of the one with the white spot in the pompom looks iffy. Still perfect rounded poms and no wattles though...

    Identification please

Pekin without a doubt for broodiness. My first one went broody at 6 months old and hatched and cared for 6 chicks (out of 6 eggs). Her sister went broody upon seeing the chicks, decided she wanted a clutch of her own.

    Day 18 - lockdown!

Oh and ps : I think you should turn the eggs every day a couple of times even when they are in storage. But get someone to confirm that for you. Humidity wise 35% worked fine for me, no water added until lockdown actually. A good rule is that by lockdown your egg should be 1/3rd air, there are...

    Day 18 - lockdown!

They are absolutely lovely, and at least you got two so that they can keep each other company. We all learn the hard way with first times, but failing is the best lesson you can get ;)

    Congratulations ! They are adorable!

Sex of these 10 week olds?

I think that's not a reliable sexing criteria, I've got two pullets with obvious spur nubs, the one with the biggest lumps is my best layer...

    Day 18 - lockdown!

Oh wow! Very pretty boy indeed! Any movement in the egg-zone?

    Day 18 - lockdown!

No worries there, it's only day 20, and saying that chicks hatch at day 21 is a general rule, not always an absolute truth. Plus, some breeds are supposed to be earlier or later than others, but here I had the Marans (who often hatch at day 23) crack the egg and zoom out on day 18, and the...

Black Copper Maran 2 week old

I'd go with cockerel too, based on the comb and wattle development in comparaison with mine at the same age : Another obvious indicator would be the color that starts to leak out anywhere other than around the neck on a pullet, yours seems to be getting a bit of copper on the head. Once that...

    Day 18 - lockdown!

@Erba Aw, that's tough. I've got the opposite problem : first bantam cochin girl lays about 10 eggs over 2 weeks and goes into unbreakable broody mode. So we let her sit after trying to convince her otherwise for a couple of weeks. And when her chicks turned 2 weeks old and started wandering in...

    Day 18 - lockdown!

I was just EXACTLY the same! :lau "No touching - no touching - no touching... :barnie" I'm leaving it to the mama hens now, much less stressful... Keep us posted!

    Day 18 - lockdown!

Oooooooh how exciting! You're absolutely right, no interfering from now on so that you keep that humidity nice and high. Not so sure about the eggs touching each other, my manual said to spread them apart so that the ones against the edge didn't get stuck. But then again, under a mama hen they...

Gender? Weekly pics of Splash Cochin Bantams - Born June the 14th

Thanks @cstephens1987 :D I keep going back and forth on Popcorn, Pearl and Papadum, their coloring just varys so much throughout the day. Off the top of my head I would say that the first two are girls, and the last one a boy (with weird coloring, he seems to be pure white which is strange...)...

Gender? Weekly pics of Splash Cochin Bantams - Born June the 14th

Caught in answer crossfire  Yes, I really just need two pullets who are already sold to a great home, no matter the feathering. And I hatched the fluffballs to be able to keep a smooth roo for myself, so I'm over the moon that Pancake is probably a little guy, he's been my favorite from...

Gender? Weekly pics of Golden Salmon Marans - Born June the 11th

Soooo, the little guy is definitly a boy :hit A few days after my last post, he started leaking mahogany feathers on the wings... We will try to keep him, he's ever so sweet, but if he starts acting up with our faverolles cockerel or the bantam cochin boy we are planning to keep he'll have to...

Thank you so much for your input! What do you think about Pop-corn? I'm absolutely sure Pikachu is a little guy, his comb and wattles are just flaming red. And Peanut, I totally agree, if there had to be only one girl it would be her. I'm hoping Pancake is a cockerel and ends up having a good...

Let's play spot the roo! Fluffballs are 5 weeks old today. One of them is veeeeery obvious, but I'd love to have your input on the rest of the bunch so that I can start sale/re-homing plans already, even though they shouldn't be leaving us until the end of August. Bantam specialists, eat your...
