Congrats on the new eggs......I also found two, rather small, eggs in the coop today. The australorps are at 20 weeks, some have bright wattles while othesr aren't quite there yet.
On a side note, I switched their feed over to layer feed last week-- not sure if that helped get them going.
I was given a chicken that looked like a barred rock, later to find out that Coastal Farm Supply sell California greys, which lay white eggs. I think they are a cross between a a barred rock and leghorn--BUT she's been laying white all along.
Maybe if you check the earlobes of the BR's and...
Not long after I let them out of the run a pullet snuck in and laid an egg in a box. I also discovered another egg under the roosting bars, which could have been missed yesterday.Both eggs are small,as first eggs should be.
We'll try this for a while until all the pullets start to lay...
My laying hens seem to be guarding the nesting boxes from the australorp pullets. I noticed this a couple of days ago, then saw it again this morning. If one of the pullets go near the pop door, the other hens will chase them away. Once in a while a pullet will make it into the house, but will...
I was at the same point as you are with the same thought. I went with one more bag of chick food then switched to layer feed at 19 weeks when the chick food ran out. The chickens seem fine and 1 week later I have my first egg from my austalorps. { only four pullets left now}
My production decreased some from December to March and then started to pick back up again. Mixed in with that was molting by the chickens{ orps & rocks }. Only my aussie kept going full steam thru the winter. So I have 5 more pullets now, at 19 weeks they should start laying soon.
I tried a...
I have 5 black australorp pullets that are 19 weeks old. A couple of them are doing the squat { and I oblige them with a pet above the tail/lower back} , this is one of the signs along with the comb and wattles getting bigger and redder.
Now it will seem like forever for those eggs to come.
I had a black australorp that laid very well this past winter and because of that I got five more.My experience with Orpingtons is that their broody, which pauses their egg laying.Plymouth rocks do fairly well.
