    Straub’s search for colored eggs

Thanks, my first round of olive Eggers were a bit disappointing because they laid light green. I was still super excited about getting any eggs at all but I paid extra for olive Eggers and they laid the same color as the less expensive Easter Eggers. I put a Marans rooster over them and the...

    Wing It Ranch

Honestly that sounds exactly as expected in my experience. 2 out of 3 made it with help and the third found the next best route to momma. You’ll have them whipped into shape in time for your trip out of town. You got this, keep it up!

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

Egg production has slowed down this time of year so I have changed to only collecting once a day. I guess Jersey Gena just couldn’t take looking at a pile of egg not being incubated and decided to go broody again. She’s going to broody jail tomorrow. We’re already over capacity going into...

    Wing It Ranch

I agree with @Auntiejessi3 let momma bring them into the flock while she’s still willing. I have had broody hens ween as early as 4 weeks. When she’s done she’s done. My current broody still has 9 week old chicks following her around. It’s anybody’s guess when she will decide it’s time.

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I’m afraid your admiration may be misplaced I’m generally very unorganized. I have been very excited to watch these Bresse grow out. They feel more meaty than my other breeds of chickens. Thanks for pointing out my copy/paste error on the spreadsheet. It has been corrected. I’m using the...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I’m trying to keep records on the Bresse growth. Still trying to decide how to keep things organized. For now I’m putting them into a spreadsheet on my phone. This week’s weight in was technically a day early but I have a busy day tomorrow so I did it early.

    Incubating double yolk?

some people have successfully hatched double yolkers but it’s very very rare to get two healthy chicks. I haven’t ever tried it but do enjoy following people who try. Personally I would never buy or sell a double yolker as a hatching egg but if you have the incubator space and are prepared for...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

The chicks are almost 9 weeks old. I moved the breeding pin backwards two lengths so they could be on fresh grass. By the looks of the yard they must go through a molt around 7 or 8 weeks. The ground is absolutely covered in feathers where it was setting. I started construction on another IBC...

    Wing It Ranch

I have no experience with an onyx olive egger but a quick google search says it’s a Marans X Legbar hybrid. I’ve heard those call Marsbars. Probably just different hatchery using different names for the same cross. If you breed your Marans rooster to them any female would have a 50% chance of...

Anyone know the gender or more importantly breed of my chicken? suspecting female but no idea on breed, came out of a "normal" brown egg

Based on comb it’s very likely a cockerel. If the egg wasn’t sold as any specific breed of hatching egg it’s probably a mixed breed. Without knowing anything about the parent flock there are way to many possibilities to make any sort or accurate guess on breed on a chick this young

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I posted in a Bresse Facebook group and a couple people said they have seen it before. From what I have seen it’s definitely something you should try to eliminate but since I’m not trying to raise show birds I’ll prioritize table qualities over feathers and cull out any feathered legs once I’m...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

The Bresse are now 8 weeks old I leg banded the pullets for identification and took everyone’s weight today Green band 1044 grams. Her legs are a bit to close together for my liking but I only have 3 pullets to work with so she gets a pass until I hatch a better one Green band 1042 grams. I...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

@wrathsfarm here are the two other blue cockerels. If I were to keep one for future breeding I believe it would be whichever of these two has the best temperament. The smaller comb and lack of wattles would make them a lot less prone to frostbite. Plus I do like the looks of the beard feathers...

I have 2 more blue cockerels with Smokey in the main coop. I’ll try to get a decent picture of those ones.

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I moved the 5 mixed breed cockerels out of the Bresse pin into the tractor this evening. They are almost 8 weeks old. I left the 3 pullets in. I might leave the pullets in there to help share the love from the 2 Bresse cockerels. I don’t see any harm in have an off breed female in the pin I...
