    roundup and chickens.

I would not spray any pesticide or herbicide anywhere near my chickens. What if there is build up of toxins and chemicals over years? What if there is delayed or long term damage? I would worry about the chicks, but also about my family of egg lovers!

    30$ 7ft chicken run!

that's awesome! must make one myself. We've lost too many chickens to hawks and coyotes out here. But they LOVE to free-range. Mostly I keep them in now, and only let them out occasionally for a few hours in the late afternoon or early evening. I can't lose anymore!

What food is best for laying

Our local feed store recommended "Poulin grain - layer" once they graduated out of the chick food. They love it and we get lots of eggs! I also give them treats daily- they love banana, bread, kernels of corn, pasta, watermelon & cantaloupe. It's great fun!

First attempt - got a rooster!

we can't keep roosters either. And even always buying pullets, we do get a few roosters. Ask at your local feed store- our town has a local farmer that takes everyone's roosters! Hope you're loving your chickies!

I have 6 new chicks (hatched 5/15/12) and 2 older layers. They've been together for about 2 weeks now. They are together in the coop during the night and free-range in my backyard during the day. I've noticed one of the new chicks is missing a lot of feathers and just found a dark green...

Two day old chicks - when to put then on shavings?

I've always done newspaper with my new chicks. It works fine. I change it daily (stinky) and I haven't seen the chicks ever get dirty. They walk around fine- don't seem to slip on it.

Brought our first chickens home today, HELP!!!

How old are they? Are they warm enough? In the beginning they should be at 90-100 degrees. We just got 8 chickens today, too. They were hatched on 5/14. 4 Brown Leghorns and 4 Crescents. I have them in a box with a heat lamp- I put in a thermometer. They are adorable!

Review by '' on item 'Plymouth Rock'

It's almost funny when I go out in the yard and the chickens come tearing across the yard straight for me! I always have a treat for them. They squat down and love to be held. They love cantaloupe seeds and leftover corn.

While I was in the hospital with my son I missed the chickens! I'm so glad his doctors allow the dog and the chickens (in the yard only). They made us get rid of the frog!

Feedback on Learning Center "Treats Chart"

My girls go bananas for bananas. They won't eat strawberries. Any bread or toast is quickly devoured. I'll have to try some new ideas from the list- thanks!

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

We lost another chicken yesterday:hit:hit:hit Our chickens free range in the back yard and the entire yard is fenced. I found the chicken without it's head and one wing. I wonder if it was a hawk. I know our neighbors have lost many chickens to fisher cats. I'm not sure if it could come...

Succesful integration of chicks in with the grown-ups! :)

thanks for the post and info. We have 8 Ameracaunas that hatched 5/1 - so we'll be introducing them later to the 3 one year old Barred Rock layers. I've been nervous about how things will go. I really don't want to have to keep them separate.
