I live in a rural area in a rural state and we get the feed that is available. I switched to Dumor several years ago (and laying improved dramatically), but I'm now changing brands. I've been on the phone several times with reps for the company. Here's the main issue: when I buy the $8.39 20#...
If the laced varieties had any other breeds introduced to get the odd colors and lacing, you won't have the true old Wyandotte character. And as in some people of the same family, there are nice ones and not-so-nice ones.
Well, the pullet did it herself, so only she knows! But 10 others a friend hatched for me hatched them with turkeys. He was 100 % successful, so if you looked up the temp/humidity for turkeys, it might work fine.
An update: On March 2 my brown red Modern bantam pullet hatched off 100% of the eggs I let her keep. She's laid 22 eggs so far. She's just now 7 months old.
I don't know about the Japanese, but I do suppose some Wyandottes are clueless, too. Owners of egg-laying breeds DO NOT like theirs to set (go broody), but I need for my Wyandottes to set because I don't do incubators.
Turns out I might be getting eggs early because I'm in Mississippi. I sent 10 of her eggs to the incubator man and 10 hatched, lost 4, the other 6 are 3-weeks old and hilarious. Then she started laying again and I let her keep 4 eggs. They are due March 1. She laid 10 in that clutch also, but...
The Wyandotte bantams I've kept over the years have convinced me they're the most versatile chicken around. While not popular in the south except maybe for show purposes, the Wyandotte is a friendly, no-nonsense bird, a fine layer of almost brown eggs, and probably the world's best mother...
Why blame the Wyandotte breed when what you have doesn't sound purebred? From my bantam Wyandottes I've had wonderful, friendly, productive, motherly, easy-care chickens.
It is entirely possible to hatch a pullet's first eggs. Testimonial: sent my brown red pullet's first 10 eggs to the incubator young man. He did a fine job and so did the Moderns. 100% hatch; one had shell stuck to it and it died later that day.
Since it looks like my Modern pullet isn't interested in setting her clutch, I found someone interested in incubating them for me. Now I read in the above stories that (a) pullet eggs don't hatch well and/or (b) they possibly need a lower humidity. I think I won't tell him and see if they all...
