    Gambel quail question

Right, I understand. With Cots I usually turn the heat off at 3 weeks and they are outside. At some point the chicks don’t need it. This is my first time with Gambel’s so I’m wondering how long they need the heat source.

    Eggs & Bumblefoot

Thank you. My wife has successfully treated our chickens, and attempted a few times on the quail with mixed results... they are so much smaller. This one is the worst I’ve seen. Thanks for letting me know she can lay edible eggs though! :)

    Eggs & Bumblefoot

Okay thank you. I do have one that I think needs to be put down. She is having a very hard time walking and her foot looks very red, not putting weight on it etc. Makes me nervous because I don’t know what egg is hers!

Can the eggs of a chicken or quail with bumblefoot affect humans at all? I recently changed the mesh to a thicker gauge on my quail floors, but we eat the eggs that the quail lay. Several have bumblefoot. Can you please advise? Thank you!

Should I brood Gambel's Quail chicks in Arizona?

Yeah I put my Coturnix outside with a lamp at 10 days. But Gambels I’m new at. Do they need a heat lamp for 8 weeks?

Should I brood Gambel's Quail chicks in Arizona?

Are you saying that Gambels need to be under a heat lamp for 8 weeks? I’m in over my head then! I have Cots hatching that are going to need the brooder! 8 weeks even when it’s warm? It’s mid 60’s at night here in SoCal.

    Ideas to move extra boys?

I’m a backyard Coturnix hobbyist and of course I have no problem selling my hens the second I can feather sex them. But the boys... I have so many. I know I know... they are tasty, cull and freezer them. Trouble is, I don’t really have the space to keep them until they are mature enough to...

    Putting coturnix quail outside questions

I put my last hatch (26 birds) outside in a partially enclosed brooder, cardboard bottom, with two 100w heat lamps when they were 1 1/2 weeks old. I am in Southern California and it was during a fairly cold (51 degree) evening their first three days outside. They all survived. I think as long as...

    New to raising ducks

Hi, chiming in because I have an opportunity to get some mallards. I thought mallards mate 1:1? Can I do with 1 male and 1 female? Or, would I need multiple females? We live next to a giant park with lots of predators, so all are birds are in mesh cages (ducks would be on ground obviously with a...

    Euthanizing chicks in shell?

Thank you so much! We put them in the freezer so it sounds like we did the right thing. Does the starter fluid knock them out only? Or does knocking them out and keeping them in there with it like... suffocate them after they pass out? Just worried they will pass out and wake up in a trash can....

    Euthanizing chicks in shell?

Hi Friends, Having a tough time on this one. I have three chicks that pipped and zipped to some degree, but after 24 hours are still stuck. This is my third hatch and inevitably there are a few that turn out like this. After assisting several, only to have to put them down eventually, I...
