About 9 weeks old. We think it's a boy. "He" is bold and confident and always curious, but we haven't heard him crow yet. Not sure of breed. Amy thoughts?
I slipped 4 day old chicks under my broody hen yesterday evening after dark hoping she'd wake in the morning and think her eggs had hatched. She'd been sitting on fake eggs for a couple weeks. All seemed to be going well, but when I checked in a couple hours later one of the chicks had been...
MommaHen77, what kind of chicken is that black one in your profile pic? I've got a bantam that looks just like that wih the dark comb and all. I don't know what kind of chicken she is.
So, in other news. Bella finally laid her first egg and it's green!! Would this be classified as an olive...
Anyone have and EE that looks like this? What color eggs do they make?
Our Buff Orpington who is the same age, recently started laying lovely little brown eggs. Today though I found TWO brown eggs in the box. So, either Peepers layed two eggs OR our EE is laying brown eggs.
Whew! I thought was going crazy. My bantam started laying only this week and i've gotten two in a day from her. I know they're hers because they're so tiny compared to the regular sized hens. I was so confused as to who might be laying egggs to match hers! Lol.
I have a flock of mixed ages and I'm wondering if it's safe to give them all layer feed now.
We have a flock of 7 hens/pullets. Half of the flock is around 18-20 weeks old and the other half is around 14-16 weeks old.
Three are currently laying and another one looks to be ready to lay any day...
This morning I could have sworn I heard a rooster crowing in my backyard flock. Since I was in the house, I didn't see who did it. So now I'm trying to figure out which of my "girls" is actually a rooster. Here are the culprits. What's your vote?
Angel is 14 week old. Bantam cochin + old...
Awe. That's a lot like what I've been going through with my little bantam Angel. About 3 weeks ago she started limping and one foot seemed a lame or injured. A few days later her other leg started having issues too and within a week she was almost completely unable to use either leg. I made a...
Good news! Angel is walking again! Sometimes she still has slight limp, but mostly seems normal. After about 4 days on Collodial silver, b12, and infant drops, she was able to stand on one foot a little. Another couple days and she was able to take a few steps. And now, a week later, she's...
Here's an article: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-great-big-giant-mareks-disease-faq
I found it helpful and very informational.
And I've got another thread going on this girl of mine with some helpful replies and some of my questions were answered by the Marek's experts and folks who...
I can imagine it would be tough with a bigger one! Especially with feathered legs! My bantam girl is easy to get in and out and making her hammock with some scrap fabric was simple. You must have loved that rooster a lot.
Here's Angel's journey so far for anyone who is interested.
Day 1: The...
This is Angel 13 days after she first started limping. She can barely balance enough to eat and was ending up stuck in her poop. So I made her a sick bed hammock so she'll have ready access to food and water. I've got her on infant vitamin drops (without iron), B12, and a little colloidal silver...
Nambroth, have you had any with full paralysis that made a recovery? With angel's condition worsening by the day, I don't think she'll make it more than another week. I'm willing to try anything that gives her hope of survival at this point. But only because I just she's so bad and getting worse...
BantamLover21, how many did you have in your flock total? Thanks for the tip about colloidal silver. I'll get some and try it! This sweet girl is the favorite of the entire flock.
Oh. Most of my girls came from a local hobbyist farmer who raises and shows chickens. (We're in the St. Louis area). And the one year old hen was an "only chicken" raised in the city under their back porch. We added her to our flock a couple weeks after we got the others. She is, obviously...
Thanks for your replies. I really appreciate it. I'll clean the coop, keep the sick one separate and hope for the best. Do you know if there's something I can give them to boost their immune systems so that maybe the others can get through it better? I've already got vitamins and electrolytes...
I'm so sad. This little one is showing signs of Marek's now and may not make it. She's been limping around for 3 weeks now.
This was her a week ago and it's gotten worse. She occasionally falls into the splits position now.
I appreciate the link. That helps.
Has anyone on here had Marek's in their flock? I would love it if anyone has a personal experience that they can share that may offer some hope for us. I still don't know how likely it is that some of my flock will survive or if I should expect them all to...
I think I have Marek's Disease in my flock. I've done a lot of online research, but there are a few things I can't find the answers to. Any help would be appreciated.
Why I think it's Marek's: At 9 weeks old our bantam started limping. After 2 weeks on vitamins she has continued to get worse...
