Marans and EE eggs REALLY difficult to candle. I tried weighing the eggs- even the ones that weren't good were losing weight. So that didn't work for me. The shadows is only way I can check.

Hi there! The eggs are dark but towards the air sack area you can see the light come thru and see the shadowed area where the chick is. That's the only thing I look for and it works for me.

I have an exact 50/50 split which I'm thrilled about for my Marans and one roo and 3 hens for my buffs. :-)
I'm hatching again in my incubator and my hen is broody. We will see what my hatch rate is with her. Have you hatched using a broody hen?

One more thing, our bedroom fluctuates in temperature too, your heater may be affecting the humidity level in that room. Ours definitely does...when are you setting your eggs?

I ran our incubator for a week before testing 4 diff thermometers and two that had humidity gauges on it. If you have time see what the humidity level reads before you set - do it. My two best thermometer readings were the standard mercury ones. I'm thinking the humidifier may help if you have...
