You don't strike me as the type of person who will find retirement boring.:)

Four hours of chicken and field business but Mow and Sylph only got out for an hour and a half of that. We put the Nestera coop together at the eldests, got it in the van and took it to the field. The legs are ready but I need some planking for the frame. It's going to look a bit odd but with...

I think that was the idea before the person who planted it lost interest.

I think the more we learn about the other species on the planet the more similar to humans we will discover they are.

Some kind of willow I think. It did provide some shelter but it also blocked a lot of growth potential of the apple tree it fell on.

A bit over two hours today. The surprise on my arrival. I couldn't get through the gate. We've had a bit of wind. As one can see from the picture, the chair took some of the weight and the gate and the strong part of the new fence (it's fine) took the weight from the top branches. The tree...

This is in fact what's going on. Mow, the whitish hen on the left is senior by age and status. Sylph, on the right is Mow's younger sister. Mow eats first. She rather fussy about this entitlement.:p I had just put this bowl and another in the coop with water before shutting them in at night...

Tribe 2 and 3 often got fed kitchen scraps and treat food on the terrace at the front of the farmhouse. There would be some attempts by chickens in one tribe to get at the food of the other tribe. Notch would give an alarm call and everyone would scatter to cover. He just carried on eating and...

It's been a good coop. It could be an excellent coop with a few modifications. I'll be interested to see how the new small Nestera coop does compared to the Solway.

Two hours. Horrid weather. Rain at varying intensities with 40mph wind gusts. More of the same due tomorrow due to a passing storm further North. We got out; and back in, on and off.

All I think we can say with absolute certainty is people who say SHE always has to have the last word, haven't heard a couple of roosters going at it. I've lain on my bed in Catalonia trying to sleep a little until the midday heat subsides with doors and windows open, listening to these...

I to have been surprised when I read posts of weeks old cockerels crowing. The least time I can recall is around four months. Maybe I missed some. It's interesting how much the personality of both senior rooster and cockerels plays in how the cockerel behaves. Mag for example didn't...

    What veggies do chickens like?

You may find that they will eat growing greenery but not greenery that's been cut for them. There is something about getting it freshly ripped from the crop one is trying to grow that is far more appealing than the ready meal option.:p

I think most people who keep multiple roosters experience similar to Perris's with Chirk and me with Major and others; it's all okay then it isn't. Sometimes one can see it coming and avert the conflict which usually results in serious injuries. The bickering fights between tribes/groups rarely...

Two hours today. It spat a couple of times but not enough to make anyone wet. They saw something but I don't know what. I turned over another plank today. Lots of slaters and bugs. The people who took on this plot dug a small corner of their plot, planted a few things and then gave...
