    A new "rogue" nest :)

Almost all my girls have started laying...only two holdouts left. Miss Big Bird decided that the nest boxes weren't to her liking so she borrowed Miss Dharma Kitty's scratching post on the back porch to lay her first egg.

I will echo what effie posted. You are not alone in your feelings. Wishing you a good outcome.

    I hate my rooster!

From my experience, getting rid of my cantankerous roo was the best thing I ever did for my flock. My sweet girls are much more calm and happy. As has been stated, one of my hens (that never really took much gruff from evil roo) stepped up as the head honcho and is doing a fine job. The girls...

    I hate my rooster!

Quote: I could have written this post last week with an adendum that my sorry arse rooster was a no-show in the protecting from hawks department. Rehomed him and now peace reigns on the farm. Chickie zen rules, roosters drool.

Predator got my hen—kill her or wait until morning to better assess?

Quote: I think I love you. And I mean that in the nicest, most platonic way. I think I love you too (in the nicest, most platonic way. Exactly what I would do.

    How do we attract crows?

Horse poo. I hardly ever have to harrow my horse pastures thanks to the crows breaking up their manure. Love my crows! They've saved my chickens from hawks on more than one occasion.

    Saved from a hawk attack!

Miss Big Bird is doing really well and has fully recovered. Unfortunately we had another attempted hawk attack today. I just happened to glance out the window whilst doing dishes and saw the flash of a hawk streak by. We have a huge deck with varied elevation that they use for cover. Thank...

    question about free ranging

Honestly, I see them all day long. My hawk attack occurred around noon. I think the only time you are safer from them is when they go to roost at night. Not much help I know...sorry.

    Saved from a hawk attack!

Hey D3invertebrates! Thanks so much for your support on the other thread. I think you're on to something with the drought. They are definitely more bold and brazen this year. So are the many other predators that lurk in the woods around me. Also, I've never seen so many deer coming all the way...

    After the hawk attack

Thank you roxyblue! I give them yogurt and/or oatmeal pretty much every day...I'll step it up. I did not think to add electrolytes. Thank you so much for the suggestion! They're all tucked in for the night. She was still moving slow this afternoon/evening. I was encouraged to finally see her...

    After the hawk attack

I saved my Buff Orpington from a hawk yesterday (thread on predators board). I checked her all over for injuries and cannot find anything other than a few missing feathers that were on the ground. This morning she is totally not acting like herself. She's walking slowly behind the others and...

    Saved from a hawk attack!

ChirpNEggBaby, that's exactly where I've seen hawks perching before....on the top rail of my round pen which is in sight of my coop. You are so right stilldeb. I'm a birdwatcher along with a bazillion other things and I have notice a much higher population of hawks here on the farm during...

    Saved from a hawk attack!

I've finally calmed down and have stopped shaking! I was walking down a hall in my home and heard the chickies chattering whilst hanging out in one of their favorite spots...one of our asparagus patches that is right under my husband's office window. I went in to his office and started talking...
