Transporting chickens cross country in a self-driving Tesla

I forgot I started this discussion. Ha! Every year I watch one of the Muppets Christmas videos. There's one where all of them are crammed into a vintage truck, including the chickens. The thought of my two roosters and the hens going by on the freeway while they're facing forward and looking...

Transporting chickens cross country in a self-driving Tesla

During a recent wildfire evacuation, the chickens (five hens and two Henries) loaded up nicely into a wire dog kennel I had on hand for just that purpose. I put a thick layer of pine shavings in the tray and wrapped the whole thing in a secured blanket. They seemed quite comfy. But for a long...

Comment by 'Sunshine Flock' in article 'Why every pet chicken keeper should have a rooster flock.'

This was very sweet to read. I adore my two roosters. They are wonderful security alarms, and I love hearing them crow. There's a great story from a few years ago about a city couple that moved to the French countryside. Their new neighbors had roosters, and the fancy city folks weren't happy...

    Bumblefoot, now swollen.

I went through this for the first time recently. Her foot noticeably swelled the next day. I repeated the epsom salt soaking and removed the scab that was trying to grow back, packed in some antibiotic ointment (triple), put some drawing salve on top (no way of knowing for sure if it helped)...

What do you think: Heat exhaustion in California or something else?

Thank you so much. It does seem like she was egg bound and backing up inside, which would explain the swollen belly. It had happened so fast as far as symptoms go. She died the same day she told me something was wrong. I don't think this sounds like Marek's, but I'd welcome some feedback.

What do you think: Heat exhaustion in California or something else?

Continuing to document here in case it helps someone else. Rosa did not exhibit leg paralysis, one of the main symptoms of Mereck's disease. I'm also remembering that the few times she was able to stand today, she looked odd. It matches the description of an egg bound chicken. She only had a...

What do you think: Heat exhaustion in California or something else?

I haven't received any responses and don't know if anyone is reading this thread. But I wanted to share that my sweet little Rosa died an hour ago. Earlier tonight I checked to see if I could feel any eggshells inside her and felt nothing. When Gertrude died, I didn't notice anything unusual...

You're not being negative at all. It's all for the love of chickens. :p

    Chickens neck!!!

Good question! There are similarities, and I know ginger is used for topical treatments. But since I'm unsure and haven't used it on open wound, I'd say just use the honey by itself. It's really all you'll need. Just make sure it's pure honey and not a corn syrup blend.

    Stray Dog!

Do you have any roosters? They're excellent for security. My roosters sound the alarm when there's a predator they're able to see. Their vision is superior to ours, and they almost always see them before I do, and often I can't see them at all because of how well they blend in with the trees and...

    Chickens neck!!!

I tend to prefer not separating chickens because of the stress I've seen it cause them. With an open wound, the idea is to give it some time to start healing. As long as they can't see the blood, and the wound isn't actively bleeding, she'll probably be fine. As for honey, it's excellent for...

    Chickens neck!!!

The feathers are likely going to hide the blood. But if the chickens see even a teeny speck, they'll continue to peck her. I would tuck her inside a cat carrier or a closed bathroom and put some antibiotic or raw honey on the wound. Some electrolytes wouldn't hurt. You can find an easy recipe...

What do you think: Heat exhaustion in California or something else?

I gave Rosa some shredded lettuce and eggs, with some blueberries off to the side. Her eyes got big as she stared at the eggs, and then all of a sudden she lunged her head at the blueberries and ate some. She had to sit down to eat. I pulled her out of the crate and put her on the wood floor...

What do you think: Heat exhaustion in California or something else?

Last week we lost our largest hen. We found her dead in the chicken yard. I assumed it was heat exhaustion because that was the one day I neglected to check on them in the morning. During the extreme heat we've been having here in California, I check on them a couple times a day. I also saturate...

Northern California: Scruffy the Welsummer Rooster — A very sweet youngster

Every time I post him in the Farm and Garden section on Craigslist, someone takes it down. But other rooster listings are there. So maddening, because that's a good resource.

That's so kind of you to comment. I really appreciate it. I'm willing to drive a few hours from here, but considering how far north I am, that probably won't get me too far.

Northern California: Scruffy the Welsummer Rooster — A very sweet youngster

I'm hoping this comment revives this discussion. Scruffy still hasn't found a new home. I never heard back from the person who said she'd take him. Plus, it looks like she lives within city limits. You must be able to legally have a rooster and preferably have experience. Scruffy is so sweet...

Northern California: Scruffy the Welsummer Rooster — A very sweet youngster

I tried calling you twice, but your son or daughter answered and asked if I'd do FaceTime and then hung up. :) I'm posting this here and I also sent you a private message. I don't know if you have your notifications set up. I had a problem with mine before and missed a lot of messages and...

Chicken lost but was here at tea?

I have a hen who enjoys doing her own thing and will wonder off a ways, contentedly digging for bugs by herself. One night I forgot to count the hens when I locked them up and a bit later found her roosting on a low branch in a shrub next to the chicken coop, sound asleep. It's a hopeful...
