Providing a pond for your ducks is great for a lot of reasons, but does that mean a huge water use dumping water everyday or can they be filtered? My journey to have a pretty duck pond that my ducks and I can enjoy without it being a big mess and maintenance nightmare has been ongoing for 3...
I drain water from the large outdoor pond straight to my melon beds in the garden a couple times a week, but it’s not a lot. The bacteria takes care of most of it. I will also occasionally turn off the pump to the black matala filter and drain it and spray down the media pads. It takes maybe...
I have 2 a 150 gal stock tank inside the coop and a 1200 gal outdoor pond that we dug in and lined with pond liner. Both have filters. each pond has a bio-steps Matala filter with UV clarifier and an additional biological filter, one in a barrel and one in a stock tank with bog plants.
the...
I had them living in the coop together separated by a fence for 5 weeks and things were still bad when the fence was down for another 2 weeks. now things are pretty peaceful but they still do not like sharing the coop at night. That will have to be addressed before winter but I’m hoping that...
I have had the exact same issue with my 2 new harlequins and my 2 runners. The runners, especially my chocolate runner was a total jerk. Then the harlequins got big and they started being the jerks. I thought I would have to re-home them but it is slowly getting better. The four of them were...
They are doing better now. I guess they just needed some more time. Everything I read said ducks are easy to introduce but maybe it’s different when you only have 2.
All four are girls. i am giving them a bit more time. I only Separate them at night in the duck house when it would be harder for someone to run away. Yesterday one of the runners finally stood up to the harlequins and chased them away from her mud hole. Things seemed to get a little better...
I need some help. I have 2 runners that are almost 1 year old and are fantastic. This spring I got 2 Welsh Harlequin ducklings to add to the flock. I have been trying to integrate them for weeks and it is not going well. When they were smaller, my chocolate runner would stare at them through...
In case this helps anyone, we have chickens and ducks and when we were installing the duck pond one of our chickens fell in we were right there and were able to get her out before she drowned. Since then, we used fencing to keep them away from it, but my husband came up with this great idea to...

Has anyone else found eggs in their ponds? My goofy girls just started laying and they laid 2 eggs each in their pond. They have sense laid couple on dry land, but not in the nest box. They used the box for several days but then stopped and ever sense its an Easter egg hunt every day.
My little runners laid their first eggs for me. They buried them pretty deep in the wood shavings so I almost didn’t see them. One of them was buried in the middle of the coop, Coco dug it up for me when I grabbed the others. It was like, “Hey, don’t forget this one”. They are now using...
Sorry I’m a bit late on the pond question but we put in two: a 2000 gal outdoor pond and a 150 gal stock tank pond which is in the duck house that we kept running through winter. Both are filtered, but we currently only have 2 ducks. When I clean the ponds or filters I use the water in the garden.
Ok how did you get them to stay on your lap? When my girls were on my lap they would run right up my chest to my shoulders and bury themselves in my hair.
It is really well thought out and well done. I also put netting over my chickens free range area and tried growing trees underneath, it’s not at easy as I had hoped. The trees tend to get damaged by the net when there is snow or winds and the net gets torn. Bushes might be better.
