    Wings hanging low?

I have a similar issue in a 4 mo old bird that I thought was a pullet but now appears to be a cockerel. (Although he seems to relate more with the girls, is not crowing and the two other mature Roos are not bothering him at all. He has always walked with his wings a bit low and slightly open...

Cream Legbar Roos - Free to Good Home

I have two year-old Cream Legbar Roos (first generation out of Greenfire Farms stock). Lovely and gentle. Looking to re-home as I've brought up new Roos from Greenfire to use in next years' breeding. Will not ship. Pick up only in Central New Jersey.

I just started looking for some good quality B/B/S Ameraucanas as well. I was referred to Tom Kernan (856)785-0678. A woman from the Sussex Cty show said he had good show quality birds. I bought some supposed "show quality" hatching eggs on EBay last year and ended up with beard-less birds.

You have to catch them when they're home. Not convenient if you come from long distances. Jersey Chickens has some nice, healthy birds. (I've gotten light brahmas, Cali Whites and BR's from them. Only problem is they don't seem to be able to keep their breeds or sexes right on very young...

    Hen with squishy, distended abdomen.

I have a Production Red hen with similar symptoms. I suspected worms or sour crop when I found her throwing up when she tried to eat. She is living inside now and seems fine except that she's got a squishy underside. What will ultimately happen if she's left to live? I'll put her down when...

    Can you eat roosters?

You can certainly eat him, but the older ones would have to be cooked low and slow. I've made coq au vin and chicken and dumplings with the older Roos (quarter them before cooking) and cook in the crock pot (5 hrs on "low") and they were great either way!

I just bought a huge container of Pro-Bios online from KV Vet Supply. I find the prices much better than in stores even with shipping. If you need some in a hurry, pm me. I can give you a baggie of it. I work right off Rt 18 in Ocean Twp.

Our four coops are not at all insulated. Have had only one issue with a rooster who suffered a frost bitten comb during that vicious cold last winter. (I'll be more diligent with Vaseline on the combs this year). We use the deep litter method with straw and I think that imparts enough warmth...

My chicken might have a sprained leg!!!!

I had a hen that hurt her leg and when I found her was also a but shell-shocked. It appears the others that she was with started attacking her (they perceived her as a weak link and fodder for predators and wanted her gone I guess). I separated her out into a puppy ex-pen (a few feet in...

OMG my chickens ATE Mice, HELP!!!!

I know the feeling!! I use a horse stall for injured birds and moved a bucket one day and under was a nest of about a dozen baby mice. The limping chickens dashed over and annihilated them in seconds. I was horrified!!

You sound like me!! I "saved" a chick that a broody hatched, attacked and threw out of the nest and after nursing its gaping wound and bringing it back from the brink, as it grew and started to show barring, I was convinced (and heartbroken) it was a roo... but luck have it, it's a little girl! :)

Quote: Not sure where you are in Ocean County, but we take our roos to Godek's Farm (Abattoir) in Morganville, NJ (On Rt. 79, not far off Rt. 18). It's about 35 minutes from us (we are in Howell on the Brick border). They charge $2.00 a bird. I hand them off and then wait in the car (I...

    Can you eat roosters?

I've experimented with a few techniques for cooking older Roos. I butchered most at about a year old (after a breeding season) and more recently I culled a 2+ yo roo that became too aggressive. I found that if you cook an old roo, let it sit in a ziplock bag in the fridge for a few days (to...

There's no 4H clubs for chickens around here.  The closest I found is in Farmingdale - quite a ways.  Still, ask the leaders at the Monmouth County Fair when you go - there may be something new since I last asked. I'm not sure how many years ago you inquired but Monmouth Livestock has been...

Agway in Englishtown sells Amish made coops. We went there to look and when my husband saw the price ($1,000 and up) he decided to build our own. He got to build two more after that! Jersey Chickens in Jackson also sells hand made coops. (Website is www.jerseychickens.com). Summer is his...

What do you grow to feed the chickens??

Yes, it's like a cabbage green. Check Urban Farmer seeds "dwarf Essex rape". It's pretty much the same varietal that I got from the Asian market in NY

What do you grow to feed the chickens??

Yes! Direct sow the seeds. It grows as easy as any of the other greens. It will bolt in the summer (which probably makes it less desirable for people that eat it, but the chickens love the flowers! I'm fairly certain Territorial Seed Co sells rape seeds. If not check online.
