What breed & gender and when start laying? Is 6 months old

Yeah, she does look like a Rhode Island Red. I have had them before, but when I bought her four months ago, they told me she was a Cinnamon Queen (not that I had a preference), and it’s probably hard to tell the difference but either way I would’ve expected her to start laying by now based on my...

Jun 24, 2025 I loved my Buff Orpingtons, especially Chelsey who was broody several times - setting on other chickens’ eggs, especially her buddy the Easter Egger, Rhianna’s eggs. When I tried to add other likely fertilized eggs because we had a very active rooster, she pushed them out of the...

Almost had a heart attack tucking the girls in last night!!

Recently, I was gonna remove the spurs on my huge Brahma rooster, Clarence, and evidently I had let them go for too long and they were not releasing easily as they had in the past. They were very resistant and in fact were hard and calcified as a horn that I might’ve found on my goats. So I...

    Bathing a Brahma!

No, I do not bathe them often. Only when it seems necessary, although they seem to enjoy it so in the warm weather, maybe I should. It’s an opportunity to handle the Chickens and examine them. I gave a bath to her because she had a lot of poopy feathers and it looked like her butt was...

    Bathing a Brahma!

I gave my full grown Brahma hen and even larger rooster each a bath today. They calm down when they’re in the warm water and also had shampoo and a little dawn dishwasher soap to try to cut through some of the grind on their feet. I think they enjoyed it.

    Hydrangea's toxic?

I’m in Southwest Ohio do you know if deer eat hydrangeas and are they toxic to them? If in general they’re toxic to animals but it seems like every time I grow a hydrangea it disappears. I’m assuming the deer are eating it.

Review by 'cincyfarmgirl' in article 'Egg Color Chart - Find Out What Egg Color Your Breed Lays'

Excellent review and chart of egg colors. Thanks a lot for that. I do like to have different kind of chickens that lay different color eggs that way it’s a clue to which chickens are laying. My favorite chickens have been: the Easter egger so little and gentle and a little skittish, but reliable...

What's the temperature where you are???

43° here in Southwest Ohio, and gonna be 55 today. But likely to be rainy. Yes, we did have those really cold temperatures there for a while getting below zero occasionally. The cold temps and snow offered a challenge, but I could close up the small chicken house to help keep them warm and cozy...

Red Mite Infestation Elector PSP on Dirt?

it appears that I have a mite infestation as well. based on all the comments on this site that appears to be a problem for a lot of people this year. Are they brought in by wild birds? There have always been a few wild birds coming and going to help themselves to the feed, but I didn’t see that...

Help!! My chicken was attacked by a cat!!

I did some research and Tractor Supply does have this product Gordon's Permethrin 10 Livestock and Premise Insecticide Spray, 8 oz that is supposed to be acceptable to use on chickens as well as just about any other animal according to specifications. It’s a 10% concentration. There’s probably...

Help!! My chicken was attacked by a cat!!

Well, they sure look a lot alike except I believe lice has six legs and a mite has eight? What I saw crawling around on the vent of this particular chicken was so tiny I could not count the legs, but it was a tiny brown speck that was moving. I guess I’d have to capture one and look at it under...

Help!! My chicken was attacked by a cat!!

Is treating with Diametheasus powder, DE sufficient for getting rid of mites infestation? If I use chemicals, do I have to keep the chickens out of the coop? I’ve heard that because it’s poisonous to them also. Please advise.

Successful vent prolapse treatment - with photos

They have a 20% Layer feed and also some chicken scratch and they have lots of opportunity to free range in the yard and prefer that. It’s been a long time since she laid an egg. I thought she was looking kinda droopy now for a while. I did see what appeared to be mites when I examined her...

Successful vent prolapse treatment - with photos

Thanks for all those details including the photographs so I actually know what a prolapse vent is. My 3 1/2 year-old Brahma has been pecking at her own vent and there’s dried poop but it’s not prolapsed. In fact, it looks more like a slit, which seems to indicate their “inlay.“ but she’s not...

    Unwanted sparrows in coop

Well, I didn’t mind a few wild birds, including sparrows getting into my covered chicken yard and helping themselves to water and chicken feed. Although I have been a little concerned about disease or germs they might be spreading, but it’s been that way now for years and fortunately not to our...

What's the temperature where you are???

Southwestern Ohio currently at 3°. Supposed to get up to about 25° today and a little sunny. we have a foot of snow on the ground. I am a little concerned about my rather hefty four-year-old Nigerian dwarf goats. They are in an enclosed area of the barn. That is not insulated. They have lots of...

    brown spot on eggs

I don’t know a lot about this, but my Brahmas lay beautiful brown eggs and sometimes there are those spots on them. I wash my eggs before I eat them or give them away and in so doing I have found that the spots wash off with an ever so slightly abrasive sided sponge.
