Hello I have always used one of those huge watermellon boxes from the grocery store, I would think it would be ok just make sure there is no open netting they could possibly get there head caught in or a nail snagged on.

My buff orphington is also molting right now actually just finishing up it is quite cold here too at night but we have had soe very warm nice weather during the day here. I am not worried just let nature take its course although she is not laying from what I understand that is normal.
Welcome to byc! I am sorry to hear about your sick bird I also recently had a problem in my flock and have been doing a lot of searches on byc. What you describe could be gapeworm possibly..you may want to do a search on gapeworm also post your birds symptoms in the disease illiness forum...
