I keep the new birds in a separate run for about a month in close proximity to the "old" hens, such that they can see each other.
After the separation period, and they are somewhat familiar with each other, then they will establish the pecking order.
If you switch from Dumor to almost any other feed, you will clean the coop much less often, and it will smell better too.
There is a thread on here somewhere (a long one) discussing Dumor feed. As a result I switched to Bartletts 20 %. My egg production went up, the poo went down, and the Arks...
As I understand it, and I read it somewhere, they will get fat on too much corn.
I think that is why we are advised to use scratch sparingly.
I freefeed 20% protein, and my birds are not fat
I think I had better ask whether or not there are any ill effects if the chickens eat the pellitized lime.
Can they OD on it? Any additives in the pelletizing process that will affect them?
Thanks in advance for the benefit of your wisdom.
I have 14 chickens, of which 2 are currently in Molt.
Today I got 13 eggs! (Yesterday was never above freezing, and today it got to 35)
Is this possible?
3 days ago I began adding dry cat food (30% protein) to their feed (25/75 mix) for the molting girls.
Have I upset their metabolism...
I have since done some more searching, and discovered Lacy has a long way to go before she can claim any records.
I did run across the 340g egg from 1896, but it did not list the chicken. Thanks for adding that HappyChick.
Other notable contributions: (from Guinness)
The current claim is from...
I have been searching for an hour and cannot find anything about Egg Size Records.
My GLW (my smallest chicken) has been laying eggs that look like Duck Eggs.
Two weeks ago she laid a 105 gram egg, and yesterday she upped the ante -- 111 grams!
Where can I find out if she is anywhere near the...
I have a Gold Laced Wyandotte, and while she always lays an Extra Large or Jumbo (she competes with the other hens), today she began competition with Ducks.
Today she laid a 105 gram Egg! Her prior record was 90 grams.
Is there such a thing as a Triple Yolker?
She is my smallest and smartest...
I have a Catawba, and a re-designed larger Catawba "style" Ark.
I close the girls up every night (8 in the large version and 6 in the original Catawba) and they seem to like the sound of the ramp closing. Other than Hawks, I have seen no predators, but I'm not leaving any invitations lying...
My vote goes to Golden Comets.
I first got RIR's after researching the list. Problem was "Comets" were not on the list. After disappointment with the RIR's, I delved deeper into research. The consensus seemed to be "Comets" for their laying proficiency, and their disposition. They were Spot On...
Egg Maker is made by Blue Seal. It is high in protein, and not available everywhere. Google Blue Seal -- they make feed for most critters.
Wal-Mart is beginning to sell Chicken feed, but be careful, it is NOT a bargain.
They also call theirs "Eggmaker", but it is only 15% protein, and it is in...
Hey Rebecca:
I think that would be a GREAT tasting egg! In fact I may try it!
The reason I found this post is that I am curious about eggs changing color. I have a Black Sex -Link, who was my first layer. She began laying a medium brown egg and in a couple of weeks they became darker (almost...
Hey Cmom:
My girls are approx 24 weeks. My W'Dotte was the second to lay back in mid July. She laid her very first egg on the ground in the run, and the next two in the roost. She finally found the nest box for a couple of eggs, and then went on vacation for nearly a month. She had been laying...
My Gold laced Wyandotte did something very strange today (or at least strange to me).
I was with them in the run, and she stopped once, and acted like she was going to make a fertilizer deposit. Then she moved on, and about 30 seconds later she repeated the motion, but this time she dropped an...
The safest thing you can use is DE (diatomaceous earth).
If the chickens DO eat it, it will be beneficial for them (I put it in their feed).
The flies will be gone as well as their larva. The reason that the sticky paper and drowning jugs don't work is that the next batch of flies has already...
I paid less than $20 for 50# here in the Seattle area. (Kipper Wrote)
It is cheaper in the West as it is mined in New Mexico.
You guys in the "hinterlands" deserve a break every now and then.
Quote your customers 2 prices, one with OSB and one with plywood, and let them decide.
On the coop, I would build the smaller one and make the blank end a removable cap so to speak. Build the end as a removable piece, attach with lag screws, and expand when you have the money.
Best done with...
DE worked for me!
When I would move the Ark, the flies would come in droves to hover around the poo.
I finally got some DE and cover the poo every 3 days, and also added DE to their feed, and I haven't seen a fly for weeks.
