You could feed her either until the chicks hatch. Once the chicks hatch, you'll want to make sure chick food is available and not layer food (from what I've read chicks shouldn't have the extra calcium found in layer food). I did the same thing you're doing insofar as building a mini-coop...
Hey there IdahoP,
Check out this fermented feed page https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/644300/fermenting-feed-for-meat-birds.
I know it says meat birds, but you will find the info relevant to layers as well. As far as your current moldy batch, I would add it to the compost pile (if you've got...
Can you keep them physically apart but still able to see each other (through a divider)? I'd try a week that way and then let the main flock into the Barred Rock's area - so it's almost like the main flock is "visiting" the neighbors instead of letting the BRs into the main flock's area. It's...
I would separate the "bully" from the rest. Keeping the aggressor away from the flock for a week & then reintroducing her to the flock may put the bully at the bottom of the pecking order and calm things down. Are the Barred Rocks new to the flock? If yes, then maybe a slower introduction to...
Hey Justine,
They are so cute! I will have to take new pix as they are growing rapidly and would love an opinion as to their gender. I sold four of them and hopefully have kept pullets. Although I wouldn't mind having one roo. I bought "Araucauna" chicks and maybe can make some EEs next season...
Hey there! I met Becky there (she was organizing it). They'll be doing it again next Saturday - hopefully the weather will be more cooperative
I will keep some to add to my flock and the rest I will sell or give to friends. :welcome
This is such a wonderful site - you'll find answers to things you never knew you needed to know and make friends in the process! Good luck with hatching - Melinda
Thank you! I tell you, they are little rolly polly balls of fluff - so cute! We have aptches of snow left. The temps keep creeping up to the low 40s, so it should melt off pretty quickly. I hear you guys are getting some cooler temps too. Hope all your fruit trees are OK!
Sorry for the delay guys, but I was having "technical" difficulties on my end ')
So, can you tell what type of Wyandottes they will be?
Thanks for the help!
