    Broody hens!:)

Adding to that: First, if you DO leave her where other hens have access to the nest, you need to mark the original eggs, so you can remove newer ones. Second, there are risks to the eggs... I've twice let hens keep eggs they decided to sit on when something stopped me from collecting eggs for...

How long to leave unhatched eggs under a broody when 1 egg has hatched?

Good thing the shop let you buy a single chick! The only real sources around here are Tractor Supply and a local feed store chain (three or four shops total). TS won't sell less than SIX chicks at a time; the feed store won't sell less than four. Updating on my situation - As of the end of...

How long to leave unhatched eggs under a broody when 1 egg has hatched?

Sadly, when I checked on Mama just before sundown last night, the second chick was out at the edge of the nest box and was dead. I'm assuming it died & then she pushed it away. Haven't checked yet today to see if there's been any more action....

How long to leave unhatched eggs under a broody when 1 egg has hatched?

Thing is though, when they were *collected* shouldn't really matter. What matters is when they start to be incubated, which is either when the broody hen starts sitting on them continuously, or when they're put in the mechanical incubator. In my case, there's a strong possibility some of the...

How long to leave unhatched eggs under a broody when 1 egg has hatched?

Updating: About an hour ago, I went down to put a small feeder with medicated chick crumble and a baby-chick safe waterer in the pen where the broody is. Took a quick look, and another egg has started to pip, 16 hours after the first one started. Thinking about it, there was a three-day period...

How long to leave unhatched eggs under a broody when 1 egg has hatched?

I have a question for those more experienced than me with hatching eggs under a broody... this is really long, sorry! I've only hatched eggs once before - two years ago, I let one of my Polish hens keep 6 eggs she hid behind a nest box. Unfortunately, my frequently-broody Buff Orpington decided...

Do you know what breed these chicks are please?

I agree with the other posters that the fluffy-headed one definitely looks to be some type of "top hat" chicken, most likely Polish. Polish do also tend to have a rather upright stance.

    Peck and Play tent

The homemade pen is cool.... I'm wondering, though, if once you add up the cost of the materials and the time, if I'd really save all that much money by making one of those instead of buying the pre-made P&P. And as the other poster said, the light weight and packability is a real selling...

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

Aussies are never brindle, and Border Collies almost never.... if she's straight herding dog mix, I'd be inclined to guess Dutch Shepherd crossed with Border Collie or Australian Shepherd.

Looks like a Jindo to me... bit short in the coat for one, though.

Do You Have A Garden, Why Or Why Not?

...however, get a bird, bee, and butterfly garden started in the front yard, which incorporated herbs, peppers, and bush eggplant with the flowers.** I plan to get the bigger garden started over the winter; going to fence in one corner of the yard & use some landscape timbers and/or concrete...

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

..."Labradoodles" and "Goldendoodles" (along with all the other "doodles", "poos", and so forth) aren't purebred. They're mixed breeds; crossbreeds** if you want to be precise. As I understand it, no "doodle" breeder - even the original Australian breeder who tried to get a hypoallergenic...

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

Well.... looks like either everybody's been away for days, or Ms. Cerys Coesau has got y'all stumped. I'll go ahead and ID her: She's an extremely odd cross - half Pomeranian and half Italian Greyhound (possibly IG/Whippet cross). The Pom parent was parti-colored - same color pattern as...

    MARYLAND THREAD!

Unless your neighbors complain, I really don't think the county cares... or has the resources to bother you about it. (God only knows if they're ever going to get the current lack of Animal Control sorted out!) I'm lucky enough to actually have two acres, but I could point out 10-15 homes within...

Neither of those. I'll add the information that she's 15.5 inches at the shoulder, and weighs around 13 lbs.

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

...and the Otterhound came from breeders, the other Basset and the Bloodhound were adopted from people who couldn't deal with them. And we were *given* the Otterhound... the breeder wanted her to go to a performance home & couldn't find a buyer who would agree to include a clause in the...

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

Yep! Good eye... he gets the build from the JRT & the color from the MinPin. Somebody in my area breeds the mix... I got him from the shelter, though. Great little dog but NOT a quiet house pet without lots of exercise. Editing to add: two of the remaining three dogs we have are Basset...

    Guess The Breed!!! Dog Edition!!!!

Here's the next one for guessing - I'll tell you up front he's a crossbreed. For size perspective, here's 2/3 of the the gang (we have six total) on the run: And playing with the Otterhound:
