    Photo Contest

This one looks like puppy went for a double face smush in the snow and was DENIED by a clever dodging by chicken on the right.

how to occupy my bored chickens?

I read on here someone spreading peanut butter on empty corn cobs and rolling it in scratch as a treat. I have done it and it works great. I froze mine before taking them to the chickens so I could hang them in the run. I screwed an eyebolt in the end and hung it from a small rope. They had to...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I have no idea. I brought in 2 eggs. I am absolutely certain now that I have had a human intruder in my coops. I have 2 latches on EVERY gate and door and today they were all UNDONE. Finally DH believes me. For a while now I have suspected it and now I KNOW for sure. I asked DH "If they...

Why did I need to know at all???

So the back story. I will try and keep it short. In the spring I was trying to get a few BA hens. Kept ending up with a rooster in the lot. No roos allowed in town. DH had a friend a work that wanted the BA roo but with the cattle and the drought he did not have time to make a coop. SO... At...

    MICE! Grumble Grumble Grrr...

Sorry for the delay in responding I have been ill. I would not put poison in the shoe boxes since chickens will eat pretty much anything that does not eat them first. (dead or not) The chickens could end up poisoned by eating the dead or dying mice. edited to add: I would also make sure you...

    Best Wire to use

I put rocks in the bottom and stuck the sticks in so if a bee fell in it could climb out easier, Kind of like a platter with sticks from the center to hanging over the edges in a few places. I liked having the bees. My garden did wonderfully this year and the neighbor brought us a quart of honey.

Does anyone get 'stuff' from their local grocery store?

I have not lately. But I used to get tons of "stuff" for the rabbits we had. Perhaps I should ask again......

    Worms AAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHH

I guess I am wondering if they were from the chickens or from flies or perhaps larva of something. If they were coming from the chickens I think you need to worm your chickens. I have not had to do that so I am not sure what to recommend. There are a lot of threads on here about it though. If...

    MICE! Grumble Grumble Grrr...

So true and so gross at the same time. The stinkers were actually eating or at least damaging my birds feathers while they roosted. I was so sickened by what I found when I snuck into the coop at midnight a while back.

    MICE! Grumble Grumble Grrr...

Try snap traps with dog food glued to the trigger. Put it in a shoe box with the lid on and a weight on top of the lid. Cut a hole in the box and put it so the hole is close to the wall so they go in. They seem to scurry along the walls. I saw on here in the pests thread where someone put the...

    Best Wire to use

Not sure what the best wire to use is. I am using 1/4 inch hardware cloth on the windows of the coop only. It has certainly helped us. My neighbor has bees he keeps. No issue with the chicken water but they swarmed the water dish I keep for the wild birds in the yard all summer. I added extras...

I am so done with Christmas...

For you all. My family is not on the great or even good list. We decided 8 years ago that Christmas was rather over commercialized and we were not going to participate in that part of it anymore. The last 8 years we have stayed home and enjoyed a quiet day with just the people that live in...

    Some construction questions

What I did and it is working well.... 2x4 welded wire put on with heavy gauge staples for horse fencing Bottom has 2 foot of chicken wire attached on top of the welded wire and 2 foot layed on top of the ground sticking out from the run area. The grass grows up very quickly making it near...

    New Coop Finally Done

I totally agree. I do have large dogs but it has been to cold out to leave them out while I am gone for more than an hour. I am going to try and borrow the neighbors game cam and see what I can get. Funny thing is if they would just come to the door I would be more than happy to give them some eggs.
