Thanks, I'll check the coop tonight with a flashlight. I've inspected some of the girls and don't see any on them during the day.

    Possible Mites, checking treatment options

I've noticed in the last week my some of girls feathers are looking a bit ratty. I think I may have a feather pucker as the feathers on the head look the worst. I've had feather puckers in the past, but I have not seen any birds actively pulling anyone's feathers so I can't narrow it down. I...

Thanks everyone. I'll keep a close watch on them this winter and see how it goes. I'll set up a garage house for them just in case.

True Serama low temperature for the Midwest

I hatched out some Serama chicks finally as it took me forever to find them without shipping! They came from a flock in Columbus, Ohio. I live in Cincinnati. I keep reading that Serama need heat when it is lower than 40F. I don't heat my coop in the winter and it can get a bit nasty here. Last...

    Papa's Poultry Review

Yes! I love Papa's Poultry. He is great with communication and when you order with the Black Friday deals its awesome. On that note, if you are looking for Rocks I just had a wonderful hatch from DMRippy (a member here). Had 14 of 17 hatch, which is amazing for shipped eggs. And he has blue...

    Papa's Poultry Review

Hi! I didn't get any of the brahma to hatch, but such is the problems with shipped eggs. My cream legbars did hatch and were easy to sex at hatch. I gave the roos and one hen to my sister-in-law and kept a hen for myself. She just began laying last month and her eggs are a very brilliant...

    Chicken Pulling and eating feathers

So today I saw 2 more of my girls pulling feathers. I have to assume my whole flock is doing it now. I feel like such a bad chicken mommy! I thought I was doing the right thing by feeding the layer feed! At least only one chicken has bad pecking, everyone else still has most of their vent...

    Chicken Pulling and eating feathers

To answer the questions: The bird in question did go though a rough molt right before Christmas. She is 2 years old. I'm going to start giving her some extra wet cat food for the next couple of weeks (I had a bunch of cans that my cat won't eat - Blue buffalo expensive stuff). I think I will...

    Chicken Pulling and eating feathers

I need some advice. I am 99% certain my favorite hen, a barred rock, is eating feathers. She is the head hen. I noticed 2 of my girls were loosing feathers on the top part of the tail base. I inspected the areas and didn't see any sign of lice or mites. Decided to wait. Next I noticed most...

White Call Duck pairs or trios in Cincinnati, Ohio

Hi, I have some extra white call ducks from this year's hatch. I just have these little ones as pets so I don't know about their show quality. I can make 2 pairs, or a pair and a trio depending on what you want. I'm still kicking around how many I want to keep. They are starting to try to...

d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hi everyone, Anyone in the Cincinnati, Ohio area want a blue D'anver rooster for free? I'll throw in a silver quail hen too. Both are from this year and the eggs were from Boggy Bottom Bantams. He's so cute - but a bit too loud for my husband.

How to get rid of hawks?

Here are some of the things I have done. My Australian Shepherd chases off any large birds she sees. If I say "vulture" she will scan the sky looking for them, and then chase. I have a fully enclosed hardware cloth run for my girls when not supervised by myself and the dog. My chickens are...

    Duck fail..need advice

My call ducks go up a very large ramp into the the chicken coop. Last year they would only go in the coop in the winter when it was in the teens. Other than that they wanted to stay out in my secure run. This year though I have added some muscovy. The muscovy started following my head chicken...

    Gardening Website I'm working on

Your list sounds exactly like what my yard has now! I want to focus on native plantings so some of my others are: 5 types of oak, chokecherry, native viburnums, many types of wildflowers (turkeys love partrige pea), lots of tall native grasses for cover, roses for cover - stuff like that...

Hi all! I got some amazing D'anver eggs from Boggy Bottom Bantams this year. They are adorable, and soooo tiny! They are really tiny next to my big girls. I was wondering if everyone's adult birds are able to eat Layer pellets. They are on crumbles right now as they are young but the are so...

Duck coop flooring in N. East Ohio

I don't have a solid roof. The first year I did, but I havn't noticed a difference. My run is just too large for a real roof - but it is covered in hardware cloth. My run is also located in a low spot that floods all the time. Adding the gravel base really helped with this.
