She actually died last night 😭 Wish I’d posted sooner, but I had read some of other peoples posts here and it seemed very hard to tell what could have happened.
I have a buff orpington hen that I assumed was broody 9 days ago when I found her sitting in the egg box. I removed her and put her in the run, and she seemed to be fine other than a purple comb. A day or two later she began sitting around and it was very hot out so I forced her to drink some...
Shortly after I posted this, I headed to my local farm store to get some advice and buy medicine for whatever might be going on. The employee I talked to recommended added fresh herbs to their water (way more my style) and I went home and put a few drops of essential oils in lieu of fresh herbs...
I did the “broody jail” starting this morning. I’m watching her in the dog crate right now and she’s moving around, eating and drinking. So that’s a positive! She’s not happy, obviously, so I’m thinking of letting her out in a bit and trying the water idea @JurassicBawk mentioned if I find her...
What brings this on? Should I have stopped her from sitting in the nest a few days ago? I’ve had to do so in the past but never let it go on for more than a day or so.
We don’t have a roo so there’s nothing to hatch, but I was reading another post that suggests putting her in “broody jail” like a dog crate, which I do already have. I think I’ll do this so that I can force her to eat and drink...it’s been way too hot for her to sit in the coop not drinking.
She hasn’t pecked me, but in the past she has gotten upset and vocal. She’s definitely puffing up, and even walks around puffed up. I meant to mention that in my post.
I have a hen who hasn’t laid an egg in the past three days but has been hanging out in the box all day and night. It has been in the 90s here so at first I thought the heat was keeping her from laying. Now I’m concerned that she isn’t drinking and is dehydrated. She’s acting a little lethargic...
I feel like I’ve had nothing but issues with the chickens I brought home a few weeks ago. The one that seemed perfectly healthy is now making a clicking noise as she shakes her head, almost looks like a sneeze. Any ideas what this could be?
The older girls are easy to catch and I have examined them for bugs. I didn’t see anything, but as I’m not an expert I guess I could be missing any tiny bugs. I don’t believe any of them are overweight, but again, it’s hard for me to really know. Is there a standard weight most breeds should weigh?
