Chickens not laying as much as usual

Yes, mine are roosting earlier and getting off later. I have 7 layers and 3 pullets, and got 1 egg. I am afraid my pullets won't lay now until January/February. It is not the temperature, it is the amount and quality of light!

Blue Ameracauna aggressive behavior; temporary or permanent

Why are you adding this rooster? I am confused. One rooster and one hen is not a real good combo generally speaking. I am glad that you culled the excess roosters, it is never pleasant but it is important for good animal husbandry.

ohhhhh??? Are you planning on keeping the other roosters? Each of us do it differently - and often times with text one does not understand the situation. Are you going to have 2 or more separate flocks? Personally I would not keep 3 roosters unless I was 100% free range, and had about 30-40...

One seven week old chick feather picking the rest of the flock

I think the OP made the right choice. Some birds just do not fit in a flock. It does not matter if they have been raised together or not. Always solve for peace in the flock.

One seven week old chick feather picking the rest of the flock

I have only had to cull once, never use herbs, don't really believe in them. I have culled birds for the table or because of too many roosters. I keep a flock, birds come in and out of my flock. But to each his or her own way of doing things. However, I would not worm chicks. Chicks really...

Hen Rivals and Hatching Eggs and Keeping the Brood Safe

ps, I don't think crooked toe did it on purpose, eggs do get broke, especially if hens are fighting over the nest.

Hen Rivals and Hatching Eggs and Keeping the Brood Safe

Well this is a bit of a wreck, and the chance of getting 5 eggs might be a real stretch. I think that you might look around, and see if you can get some live chicks. The theory of a broody hen, is that she lays an egg, goes about her business, lays another, repeat - until the nest looks right...

Blue Ameracauna aggressive behavior; temporary or permanent

How many hens do you have, and how old are the hens. Personally I would put him with the whole flock and give it a week. If they are not in love by then, he is not going to work out. If the older girls thump on him, let them be. I am not for him being killed, but older girls can teach him a...

    Bloody egg

Think of it as a paper cut, sometimes there is a little tear. It will heal up just fine in a couple of days. Might be because she is going into molt, and her hormones are drying up. I would not worry about it, it might be a little for a day or two, but it should not be more than that.

Topic of the Week - Preparing for Cold Weather

I live in western SD, and it is generally fairly dry, but we do get snow, and we do get cold weather. In the run, I have two small shelters, I put shower doors in front of one, and plexiglass in front of the other. This gives them wind protection and on a sunny day, it is much warmer in there...

One seven week old chick feather picking the rest of the flock

You deworm chicks? I would not recommend that. Chicks should not have a worm load unless the conditions are terrible.

    Starting my resilience flock.

I generally do broody hens, however my great broody hen, Gramma Feathers died this year. She raised chicks for me for years. I have hatched eggs or slipped chicks under a hen. But sometimes you can get chicks and no one is broody. Mrs K

    Question about one mean girl

Always solve for peace in the flock. The worst thing you can do is wait. keep her separate - I would have tried what you did, and it didn't work, it was a good first step pin less peepers. In small flocks these can allow you to keep all of the birds sell the bully. She is just not fitting in...

    Starting my resilience flock.

I have raised them both ways, the sooner they are in the coop/run and have space to run and jump, they will quickly be as healthy as chicken raised birds. I put mine in the coop at 3-4?weeks.

Should I change out deep litter bedding before winter? Because it could cause too much moisture?

Personally I have never done Vaseline. What is more important is ventilation which is so hard because one tends to worry about warm and wants to close the coop up tight. Fresh dry bedding also absorbs moisture. Ventilation above their heads will pull warm damp air out of the coop. Those are...

To Rehome or not? Help please!

I would be wary of the bantam birds. Polish often have a weak skull, where a peck can kill them. Some people can get bantams and full size birds to get along, but a lot of people report creating a separate flock for them. Add clutter, multiple feed bowls set up so that while eating at one bowl...

Thinking about buying this hen but concerned about its feathers

I agree with the idea it is molt, but molt could hide a lot of sins. Generally I am not a big advocate of quarantine as it is nearly impossible to do well in a traditional backyard, but I would do it in this case. Molt does cause a lot of problems. You didn't ask, but I don't think adding two...

New chicken mom here with a quick question about integrating new chicks

The thing is, you have basically doubled your flock. The question is, how much space do you have? A couple of things are possible: they will ignore each other, the littles will be a sub flock until they begin to lay, at that point they will be one flock. The older birds will terrorize them...
