She did it!!! This is the first time Cookie has operated the rat-proof feeder correctly and without help. I want to see her do it safely a few more times before removing the clip and going back to being rat proof, but she is well on the way. :wee

Several of mine walk around completely covered in their dust bath (it looks terrible) until I am close enough to get covered - and then they shake it off energetically! :gig

Agree it will be interesting to see how it evolves. She is certainly still very protective of them and for sure without her there right by them Calypso would knock them off and claim the spot.

I really feel nature could have developed a better system for chickens. These molts look so brutal for them.

Well I never thought I would see the day when Tassels gave up her favorite roosting spot. It is the most prized spot - right up against the wall on the right. Every lead hen I have had always claims that spot and even mild mannered Tassels has made it more than clear on multiple occasions that...

3 of my 11-week olds are using Al’s feeders just fine. The 4th is still too small. She weighs enough but doesn’t yet have the reach.

Yes I test. I am vaccinated (including last week) and wear a mask on planes and trains, and try really hard to wash my hands and not touch my face if I have been out and about. I think I have only had one non-Covid cold since Covid started and raised my awareness of all that. The one non-Covid...

I tried a net and that was OK but the net got grungy. Then for ages I used one of those long S-hooks that you use to hang hanging baskets. Those won’t go through the tough stem but that doesn’t matter. And then I got some of these - game changer! They are like kebab skewers but with a hole for...

This is not reassuring to me or @ChicoryBlue who will be getting Plus-sized normal roosters. Did I mention the Plus-sized?

I hang mine and they play tether ball with it. They are quite skilled at timing their lunges at the cabbage at the right point in its swing. A head of cabbage lasts about a half a day.

Should I change out deep litter bedding before winter? Because it could cause too much moisture?

I would avoid Vaseline. There is a risk it traps moisture next to the skin and makes the situation worse. This is also true for people by the way and has actually been studied in soldiers deployed to very cold locations.
