    No Eggs!

If they aren't laying, they shouldn't be eating layer. If they're molting (highly likely, everyone is), they should have a higher protein, around 20%. I dunno how the feed companies convinced people that layer stands for "adult" rather than "laying", but they do the chicken hobby a disservice.

2025: What worked and what didn't?

Yeah I wouldn't be happy about random substitutions either... They could at least ask first. These Spanish I got from a breeders hatching eggs. They are supposed to be the best in the US as they are recently imported from Spain. And they are Large fowl (technically, but about Leghorn size)...

Things you wish you could say

I know how to build the prototype for my awesome incubator idea because I'm all mechanical and stuff. How to program the computer. How to get the gizmos to work. Argh! Becoming an inventor is hard. And most of my ideas have been stolen, some before I was even born. Which means someone first...

2025: What worked and what didn't?

Interesting! The only sort-of new breed I tried this year is White Faced Black Spanish. Ok, I had them a couple years ago but those were unhealthy (genetics), so I couldn't keep them alive long. These are healthy. But I only ended up with a cockerel and pullet. The pullet is taking her sweet...

Artificial Lights v/s None During Winter for Egg Production Poll

I used to keep things natural, but we have shorter days in the south. One year we had broody hens all summer, spread out molting in the fall, pullets who hadn't started laying by fall... Well pretty much the only consistent eggs we got that year were in the spring. I got some mellow lights -...

    Resuming Light during Molt

Murderous chickens attack & kill crow - is this normal?

I've seen some of my flock chase off crows before... We had one particularly outgoing crow who my mom trained to come for eggs (in the people yard, it was the dirty eggs), kinda crazy seeing them pick up a whole egg in their beak and fly off. Anyway, it was a hot dry spell and the crow kept...

    Resuming Light during Molt

Oops, guess I didn't specify the light is for the others who already molted quickly. But the whole main coop will be affected. Some of my older girls and one mixed breed take their sweet time. Cocomo took 4 months last year... Looked like she had spots with new dark and old light chocolate...

    Resuming Light during Molt

...I'm in a bit of a hurry, so I want to turn the lights back on sooner. Some of my older hens are mid-molt, so I'm concerned about rushing them. * The hurry is that I want to get rid of a roo who crows at 3am... So I want more hens in lay to get another good hatch from him. I settled into...

What do we think about this guy hatching 100's of supermarket eggs for likes on Youtube?

If there was a Hatching Police, we could call them on a lot of our members for having too many incubators or like me - hatching out of spring season. Maybe it's a division of the Chicken Math Agency aka CMA. 🕵️‍♀️ ... Just teasing! 🤪

Things you wish you could say

Right! And some who carry one in their pocket are perfectly okay, when pressed, with dispensing with some aspects of the constitution in favor of only the bits they like. They ignore the conditions the founding fathers were trying to prevent from repeating even while it's happening in front of...

Things you wish you could say

Nope. But I have an Aussie mum so I can ask her what things like that are... Sounds weird. My uncle recently came over for a visit and it was so funny walking around Publix with him trying to find suitable "Crisps". Of course he wasn't walking but driving the motorized buggy for those mobility...

    First Winter

Do be careful because a bale with mold growing inside generates heat and they've been known to spontaneously combust. A lot of livestock barn fires started that way until farmers spread the wisdom of separate buildings for hay storage, and only kept soon-to-feed hay in lofts and tack rooms. It...

Over researched and made myself anxious about coccidiosis

Sounds great! Excellent planning for a first time chick mom! Yep, okay, that's it. The Sav a Chick is an electrolyte supplement, it's supposed to be used for short periods not as their constant water. So they have too much salt, that's making them thirsty, then they drink more water and wind...

Over researched and made myself anxious about coccidiosis

Do you mean because of the watery poo? That's most likely to be caused by getting too hot. Does their brooder have a sufficiently cool end now that they're a little older and starting to get their wing feathers in?

Over researched and made myself anxious about coccidiosis

Most people don't have serious issues with it. Those of us who do tend to have environmental circumstances, such as a very wet climate. Some strains can be more aggressive and/or more subtle. I also struggled with well water being a source of contamination... Then I tried buying spring water...

    Parenthood Thread

I don't have any experience, but if it were me I would consider it completely reasonable to just get more convenient shoes to wear for the rest of your pregnancy. After all, they all wear out soon enough anyway. My mother's back prevents her from bending over much, so she exclusively wears...

Baby chicks pecking walls and breaking ends off beaks

I'm having trouble imagining chicks being able to damage their beaks on cardboard. They're pretty resilient things, and cardboard is easy for them to destroy (mine have). One thing I'm thinking is, since it sounds like you didn't have the chicks for the first week of their life, perhaps the...

    Broody Crushed Chicks

...egg hatched this afternoon! It was zipping so slowly all morning, seemed tired. I finally decided to help, so picked off some eggshell in the line. *Crack* there's a chick kicked out into my hands. It seemed really large for its egg. I don't know if that's actually a thing, but I remember...

    Broody Crushed Chicks

I just wanted to vent, more than anything. Yesterday we discovered 5 newly hatched chicks crushed by the broody hen. I can't understand why she did this 😭 She had experience, not necessarily our best broody but a decent one. We found one alive who is doing well under a plate heater now. We had...
