    Fermenting Feed

Why do you believe you've been over feeding them? What have you been feeding them? Ducks have a similar digestive system to chickens. https://ducksofprovidence.com/duck-digestive-system-anatomy/ One small but important difference is ducks tend to have a smaller crop capacity than chickens...

I used to peg down the the snap traps I've set in the past with tent pegs. These were the old type on a bit of plywood sheet so a couple of holes for pegs was easy enough. Thanks for reminding me.

Ah, yes of course. Not sure I could get fine powder to stay on any of the chew points. I could leave some on the ramp and some might stay on the nest box roofs. Any dry powder on surfaces is history within minutes at the field because of the wind.

You're right unfortunately. It's got to go. I will probably end up setting snap trap enclosures.

Three hours today. It stayed dry with sunny spells, 8C maximum, while I was at the field. The wind though was gusting at 30mph plus. Everyone did venture out for five minutes then a gust came, almost taking mow of her feet and everyone went back into the coop extension. Glais came out on and off...

After a rummage through the cupboards the best I could come up with today (I read your post this morning) was some piri piri stuff in a bottle. I don't eat it so I've brushed loads of that on the chew areas. I've got chilli flakes and fresh chillies but no cayenne pepper.:D

I brushed permethrin on the coop pop door last night and there were no new chew marks today on the door. I don't know about the finger nail stuff; I've never bitten my nails.

It's a she.:D I know her. She's been there the past two years to my knowledge. She's a noticeably darker brown than her offspring or other rats I've seen here. These aren't one foot long river rats. These are small country rats, body length maybe six inches fully grown. She moves from cover to...

Broody hens still doting on 12 week old chicks?

I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a normal when it comes to hens raising chicks. If everyone is getting along I can't see anything to worry about. Sometimes the hen restarting egg laying triggers the broody off switch, but I've known hens take their chicks to the nest, or leave them with...

Warmer then yesterday but it rained all day on and off. They came out from under the coop to eat when I arrived. Having bolted some food down they went back under the coop and that was it for the afternoon. The rat. It looks like measures of extreme prejudice are going to be necessary. Having...

Depends who you ask. The current state is bird flu is mainly transmitted by migrating waterfowl. Wild birds have been found dead and infected with bird flu so a proportion of the wild bird population can and has contracted the virus and in that case while they are alive, they are transmitters of...

Two and a half sunny hours at around 4C. The water in the run froze overnight, just a thin sheet that was floating when I arrived. No sign that the water in the coop froze given it was mostly gone. I cropped this image from a couple of days ago.

I'm going to have to look into a method of supporting some form of netting over the coop run for the inevitable DEFRA directions due to bird flu. A couple of posts in the middle of the run might be required for support. Could really do without this problem.

Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

Limps. Very difficult to do much about if the problems not visible. The ones I've seen, I can't say dealt with because I have yet to have a chicken fully recover from a major tendon strain, muscular deep bruising and maybe even partial hip dislocation which would need an xray to establish. I...

I want to suck the sour crop liquid out with a feeding tube from my chicken's crop but

If the situation is critical and the assumption that it's straight forward sour crop is wrong, or even if it isn't, might not crop surgery, which has been successfully done and there are videos and advice on how to do it available, be a better option. You would have the benefit of being able to...

Two and a half dry, cold but sunny hours today. I've been a bit concerned about the water freezing. If it has, it's been a thin skin gone by mid morning I would have thought. Last year the bowl of water in the coop froze but I think that was around -6C overnight and it didn't get above freezing...

The article is largely irrelevant to the irony, the arrogance and humour.
