Ok thank you! She’s only recently laid her first egg so I’ll have a while to wait before we hatch any chicks! But I’ll be super interested to see how they come out!
Oh ok great!! I don’t actually know what the parental genetics are as they were shipped eggs, however I do know that this is the make up of her flock.
"Hens are a range of colours including paint, buff, black, white and grey most hens are bearded.
Roosters are buff, splash and white and are...
Thanks! Thats what I am hoping for, I absolutely love paint, however splash are beautiful too but seems so hard to tell and I have had 50/50 on peoples opinions 😆
If the dad was splash or any of the other colours they had in their flock, could he still be paint? Genetics (and silkies in...
I’m new to silkies and trying to learn about colours etc, but I’m finding a lot of conflicting advice and no conclusive answers!
I thought my boy was paint but someone told he has a blue white base. So after researching more, now I think he’s splash as his spots aren’t as defined despite the...
Yes it was very hard to watch! And as my first integration I wasn’t sure whether it was typical or not… now I think seeing the new girl I’m either very lucky she just had the personality that would gel, or this is more typical than the previous girl. She is very timid whereas Betty most...
Hi @Mrs. K and @AGeese!
I just wanted to update to say that we decided to rehome Betty. She really wasn't getting any better and Mrs. K's comments about some birds just not getting along was ringing in my ears.
We found another pullet who is just gorgeous and has been an exceptional addition...
...DNA until today! Although good news is, it is underway and should have an answer by Tuesday ish.
This “girls” wattles and comb have only gotten bigger! She’s 19 weeks now… no crowing, no eggs, but she’s being a bit of an a**hole. 😆
Updated pics attached, and I’ll report back when I get the...
Thanks so much @AGeese and yes, I always dispose of correctly... I'd hate to think of anything being harmed by my poor disposal.
I'll take a look at IPM - thanks for the tip!
Happy New Year and enjoy your upcoming break!
Thanks @Mrs. K, I'm having exactly those thoughts. I am happy to see if it is just transitional, but if it isn't she's 100% out. It's horrible seeing the peace disturbed!
I have posted off the DNA samples now, and paid for the 48 hour express service (as well as put them in express post!) So I...
@Mrs. K - An update on the integration! Betty (new girl) went into the coop for her first full night on Christmas Eve; I put her on the lower floor, while the main flock slept upstairs. In the morning, the lil rooster lad had a minor scuffle with her but nothing more than a bit of intimidation...
Thanks so much @AGeese, sorry for such a slow reply, Christmas holidays and whatnot! Hope you had/are having a great break!
Even though I prefer to use natural methods where possible for prevention, I certainly am not against clinical medications when necessary!
I have Corid and Permethrin...
I know this new comment was three years ago now, but I just wanted to say it was awesome you followed this up! So heartwarming to read about her life as the matriarch so many years later 🥹 I hope she stayed healthy and enjoyed her final years, or is even still around now! So many people never...
This is REALLY helpful, thank you so much! I will be sure to follow this to the T.
Should this be done later down the track, i.e. after a week or so of being in her own run solo (I am assuming so) or is this a sooner rather than later thing?
I actually followed a bit of a similar process when...
The original three were hatched right here in our home ☺️
They have been absolutely cherished ever since, and I've done everything I possibly can to keep them safe and healthy no matter the cost! My pets mean more to me than most humans 😆 I have been researching everything under the sun to be...
Thanks Mrs K!
It is quite common for people to think Aus isn't green (if that's what you meant, ha!) I was very surprised when I moved here to find there are even ski resorts just a few hours away from Sydney!
Thank you so much for your reply! I was so thrilled when I read your message...
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your insight! I am here to learn and soak up as much knowledge as possible and this forum has been wonderful for that!
I have heard a lot about roos puberty kicking in and them turning into little monsters! My Dad has chickens and my Aunt has a huge flock on...
Thank you so much for your comment.
It IS my first flock 🥲 I have thought about rehoming her however I only had three, and I wanted to balance the flock a bit since we have boy.
Oh really on the roundworm?! The vet said it is because they are free ranging and eating worms etc. It's not a farm...
Thank you so much for your reply @Mrs. K!
I don’t know if she got the other two from the same place or not… I am guessing not, as when I collected Betty the lady said that someone had just been to collect his brother. She’s sold him for $5 and gave me that note as change. She didn’t mention...
I'm integrating a new chicken for the first time (who's been in quarantine for 16 days), and want to know when she can be in a separate run visible to my existing flock.
I got her November 23rd knowing I was getting another chick the same age 3 days later, however this fell through multiple...
He turned all of those things down yesterday! But he has had a lot more today and definitely has a bit more of an appetite.
Vet said keep him seperate for one more day so we can monitor poops and food, and then he can go back to them.
He’s actually always been the bully so I am hoping they...
