Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Was just thinking about this poll. I checked "whenever it needs it" which is the old coop. As far as the actual coop goes it will still be "whenever it needs it", but I incorporated a poop tray into my newly built coop and that gets scooped daily, or at most every two days.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Nosy Amber "helping" to scoop the poop tray. It always astonishes me how curious chickens are. Always wants to come see what I'm doing, although I suspect mostly she just wants to check if treats are involved.

Bantam Buff Cochin Cockerel - Central Alabama

Well, as the saying goes, doesn't hurt to ask!

Bantam Buff Cochin Cockerel - Central Alabama

Sorry :(, no. Really don't drive all that much, and when we do it's usually just to Wetumpka or Chattanooga where we have relatives. The most I'd be willing to do would be very local, within 10-20 miles.

Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

Just recently discovered this thread. I'm slowly making my way through all the previous posts (I'm up to page 160! Hurrah!) Nice to have a place to hang out.

Name 3 Things You Did Or Will Do Today - 2025

Go through all the fasteners and toss or pass along the ones that I'm unlikely to ever use; organize said fasteners in my new workbench; and build roll-around carts/tables to get the bench bandsaw and drill press off my miter saw bench. First two accomplished, third started. I feel so organized.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Got a good picture of Falco. I'm trying to re-home him, dunno how successful I'll be. It's so difficult to move boys along, especially little bantams.

This is a long shot, but 6-month-old Falco needs a new home. He and Pippin have started fighting a bit and I'd like to move him along before it gets out of hand. So far Pip has put him in his place without too much bother, but I don't want it to get to the point of a knock-down drag-out. I don't...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

    First Queen's egg!

    I'm going on an adventure!

First Queen's Egg! Right on schedule. I'd guesstimated sometime between the last of October and last of November, so she's sort of smack in the middle. I suspect this is from Elizabeth as I'd noticed her going in and out of the coop the last few days which just struck me as a bit unusual. You...

Fake Eggs in Nesting Boxes-- Good Idea, Nah, or Meh?

Been there done that. I've got little x's on the fakes so I can tell the difference, but in the twilight, they tend to disappear. I really need to put marks on them that are a bit more obvious.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Aaaand - last night everyone put themselves up. We went and checked on them after about an hour, everyone except for Falco and one of the Queens was roosting on the lip of the poop tray. I'd sort of expected this, as when I was building it, it just looked like an attractive place for a chicken...

    I'm going on an adventure!

Well, last night everyone went up (hurray!) - except Helena (boo!) Who was in her "usual" spot on the peak of the green coop. So, I had to go pop her through the door before it closed at 5:30. She complained vociferously at being held, but once inside did figure out (despite the fact it's almost...

    I'm going on an adventure!

As expected, last night was a rodeo, although not as bad as it could have been. No one went in the big coop on their own, even though I'd closed up the other coops. As it got darker they got more confused. I had Mr. RoseHawke on the inside of the new coop to block off the pop door between...

    I'm going on an adventure!

IT'S FINISHED! Well, maybe not finished, but at least to the point of being functional. Tonight will be the first night we'll put them in the Big Gray Coop. I expect a free-for-all. I'm thinking I'll probably shut the door of the little coop ahead of time and then gather up chickens. There's...

    Central Alabama winter advice

It will be fine. Even the very occasional single digits we get will be fine. The thing is, it seldom stays below freezing here - 20's at night sometimes, with highs in the 40's or 50's the next day is about as bad as it gets.

Went to the Heart of Dixie Poultry Club show today. Saw a few of Pip's brethren. I was quite taken by the Seramas. They're so tiny!

    Propolis tincture?

True. It's getting to where I don't trust anything that's not, as you suggested, from a .edu or .org, or better, a scientific abstract. Although even those you really need to chase down and make sure it's from the actual researcher and not from a study of studies as it were.

Chicken Run. Stumped on what I should do.

I just used pressure treated 4x4's pegged into the ground with 1/2" rebar to put my run on. Don't know how long it'll last, but it'll sure outlast me.
