Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

The good thing about the Rooster Allies FB group is that the Guides area doesn’t change, they might add more posts to an area but otherwise it stays the same. They really are trying to make it a useable resource. The Discussion area does change with new posts but the other areas are pretty...

Hmmm too bad, I’m sorry. iPad or Android? Device or PC? The site may be optimized for Apple. You might try asking a moderator for help. If you can find how to!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Chilly Fluffy Butt Friday from two hard-molting toasted marshmallows Tedi, molted first and is beginning to get some neck feathers in Annie, who just lost a ton of insulating fluff and is beginning the worst of it. She’s hanging a lot by the panel warmers but couldn’t resist the chance to...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

...When you click on Guides you’ll usually get a divided page, the listing of the chapters on the left and the specifics of a chapter on the right, *OR* it might all be on one page depending on how you’ve navigated away and back, with the chapters in boxes. Click on a chapter (like “Spurs”) to...

Oooh great idea! I’m going to try that with the board attachment to the walker here, plus this old hand loom I plan to employ soon also. Even better, I have some of those on hand!

I use rubber bungee cords, those flat ones, but it is not easy to get the right length working. Better might be small eye screws into the boards, probably on the undersides, and zip ties (they make releasable ones) through them and around the legs? And / or the steps & round rungs.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I see the 2x4’s set on alternating sides of the steps on the step ladder. Unless it’s really narrow they can hop up on one to the left, say, then hop up right, then left, etc going up that way. They were examining the integrity of the ground where I placed the legs, and one was making sure it...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Not sure about cutting up a beautiful wood straight ladder in good shape, thats a valuable item! Have you seen the price of ladders lately? I favor the step ladder - we have a wooden one and an aluminum one. Guess which one gets used? The wooden one is insanely heavy. Note, wood ladders are...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Will post pics, but it’s not cut yet, DH hasn’t done it and I have to get my courage up to use the circular saw, or use my trusty but dull manual saw. But I’ve been working madly on the run roof construction in between the bad weather, that has priority! Clothes on a chicken Chickens used for...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Understood. I also like things I can take apart easily enough, you never know! I can’t think of a design choice rats wouldn’t be able to overcome if it involves dirt / real ground, or even wood they can chew. Even if you permanently closed that area off or built it that way, then you’d be...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Thinking about this more, but first thoughts - why not put the cat tree post further than 6” away from the other post (and those blocks at the base) so that a full grown chicken can pass between them so the post itself becomes a good dodge item. Like 10”? There’s a reason you don’t want to use...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Your adult hens are in control now, yes, but who was top chick when the little ones were in their brooder? Shehnai was an “in charge” chick from the get-go. Totally the boss, chest-bumping everyone daily.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I agree, the algorithm- driven sites are a pain amd I find FB inscrutable sometimes! However, the groups can be a little different because they are in control of their home pages and organization and here they’ve made it easy to find the index, although I’ll have to go there again to describe it...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

So far I’ve found the most resources on the Rooster Allies Facebook group page, they have indexed the relevant posts - text and videos - nicely organized by topic, and the recommended topic order. They’ve made them into a Guide, very easy to navigate. I’d start now, while you are forming your...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Check out the Roovolution web site, podcasts and especially their Facebook group called Rooster Allies. They have a bunch of text and video guides about roosters and how we can interact with them there. The Roovolution philosophy is to be a helpful ally to your rooster in his duties, not to...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Shehnai has been pursuing and "playing" with his sisters. He only jumped one once while I was out there, he seems to be mostly respecting what they want. Twice I've seen him approach and stand near a pullet so that his shoulder is next to her back half. She objected and moved away. He's not...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I have a 4’+ pallet that I’ve had up on cinder blocks. I like your idea here! The pallet I have is hard to deal with size-wise, and fitting it in the run too….so I’m going to cut it in half, and see about this idea on a smaller scale and make two of them!
