    Debbie's Silkies

My understanding of partridge silkies as if you have a white rooster, you might randomly but not commonly, pop a partridge out with any given silkie hen. I found that to be true with my pet quality ones. They have a white rooster, and in years past, when that's all I had, I had gotten several...

    Debbie's Silkies

Oh no. They use the ramp. Maybe it's not in all of the pictures but all four pens are identical and I saw it in one for sure.

    Debbie's Silkies

I'm pretty sure he's a red pyle. Mine I've posted above recently that look buff are buff, as Millie/Missie (I've called her both) was broodie most of the summer. She was my only partridge, so no further red pyles around here. This one you saw is a baby of Peachy and Millie, but I know nothing...

This makes for a beautiful understanding of our chickens in comparison to our own lives. A lot to ponder.

Last month, I posted this on Facebook with an overwhelming response. Whenever I am stressing, they can change that pretty fast. I just go spend some time with them. They do understand life better than we do!

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

We never have supplemented light, and ours lay half as much as usual, but all winter. These are silkies. We do heat, but only to 40°F, and they come out when the temperature is 20°F or higher and no wind chill. Otherwise, we keep them locked up.

Is she better off here as a solo hen or in a new home as the weakest link?

Pecking usually has three causes. 1. There's a bully or bullies 2. Overcrowding 3. Lack of protein 1. Pull the bully or bullies out and pen them separately. 2. Ensure there are 4 sq feet per bird in the coop and 10-15 sq feet each in the run. 3. Feed higher protein food like all-flock...

Day 24 - one chick has been pipped since last night without zipping. Can I safety hole unhatched eggs?

Wow, after this, I would get yourself a separate thermometer/hygrometer as I'm thinking your incubator temperature is off. They all should be pipping and hatching on Day 21, or a day either side of that. It's recommended waiting 24 hours to assist, but if it's making progress, then let it keep...

Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

We had used the powdered Corid, and then a few years later needed it again and saw that was expired. We went to buy some more and the liquid was on sale at Tractor Supply so bought that. Either one is fine. It would be so awesome if you could get their poop tested though.

    Bruising around head?

When you said you only had her sister, that's why I discounted it being bruising from another chicken and tried to find other reasons. I asked about mosquitoes, as I read fowl pox can sometimes start out like that, so just keep an eye on it. It would turn to scabs if it were. She definitely...

    Bruising around head?

Hi, and welcome to BYC! What breed is your cute little chick? I'm just wondering if it's something to do with the breed of the chicken. Do they get anything besides their chick crumbles? Do you have mosquitoes where you are?

Remove the partitions during lockdown or nah?

I have a few larger Brinseas. At lockdown, I take the racks out and lay down rubber shelf liner so the chicks can't slip around as much when they hatch. Yes, the eggs are now on their sides. I jack the humidity up to 70%.
