Hubby gave mine to the ducks! :he
I told him ducks don't need heat unless it gets below zero. He has a soft heart and wants their duckhouse to be cozy for them. Whatever lol. He built a wire rack to protect it so the ducks can't get closer than 6" to it.
I bought myself a heated lap...
This is what's in the breeder coop, 12'x20'.
Much more wattage, 1500. It doesn't run often, we've noticed, but only had it since this last January. We like this for one thing, not many larger heaters like this will let you set them for as low as 40/45°F, which is what we keep them at. Also...
We have two of these. One for me, one for them. They've lasted nearly a decade. Oil-filled, only 400 watts, and one heats a 5'x12' coop to 40/45F, for the most part when set almost to the lowest setting.
These are NOT like a cozy coop, and you have to put them out of the chickens' reach...
I'll just toss what we do here for our silkies as we've been through a few different kinds of feed, and we watch nutrition closely as they're prone to vitamin deficiencies.
Everyone here, from day-old chicks to ducks, eats Kalmbach's All-flock crumbles.
Their scratch, occasionally fermented...
Our method may not work for you, but we live out in the country. It's by method of a 20-gauge. The first one was about five years ago. Hubby was at work and it was an old rooster who finally was giving his last breaths. He wouldn't wake up. I couldn't watch him thinking he was suffering, so...
I've honestly never heard it referred to as "removing from the flock" as in relocation, although perhaps in some countries or cultures it is.
Culling to the vast majority here means exactly what you mean, killing.
90 ducks! Wow! Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow
I had written an article about Mice Deterents and there's info in there about what's used. The only thing I know to avoid is Tea Tree Oil because it can be toxic to parrots (I have two). Cedarwood is another I'd stay away from.
If I can't trust...
Hi! Sorry nobody got back to you.
How is your little quail doing?
If you have further issues, please post in our Quail forum. It could be that chicken people saw it was a quail and were shy about replying to you.
Yes, always. I don't know anyone who would cull for something like this.
Knock on wood, but if they got diseases, yes, I would treat. We already do Marek's and AI prevention (CS/B) here, going on over a year now. If any of them came down with something, we'd have mitigated their illness, but...
So beautiful!
The one on the far side isn't purebred silkie but sure looks like a cockerel to me. The one in front of him appears pullet to me, but see what its comb looks like. Frizzle silkies are sometimes nearly impossible to sex until they crow or lay an egg.
This one, I'd have thunk...
Regardless, I wouldn't mix that in my chickens' feed forcing them to consume, for one, that high level of calcium. Maybe once would be okay, but I sure wouldn't make a habit of it or that could be overdosing and hard on their kidneys, if not other organs as well.
For calcium, most of us put...
The best way to find out is to soak the foot in warm Epsom salts or just very mild soap water for a few minutes, then inspect it. What is on the toe looks like something too. Your photo gets blurry when blown up so can't take a good look at it, but I think soaking it should clean it up if it...
Hiya, Rachel, and welcome to BYC! :frow
I too would love to see your little flock if you don't mind sharing!
We're so glad you're here! Please make yourself at home!
My silkies are all bearded, but we have nipple waterers, so they don't usually get those wet. That said, the mushy mash I give nearly daily will sometimes make me think they should make chicken bibs. She's very pretty!
The first thing I'd address is the lack of laying. The older ones are...
