    Rescue Rooster needs help!

Given where you got them from, I'd guess they haven't been getting their nutritional feed. Since you have a rooster and a hen, I'd get some all-flock for higher protein, less calcium for him. Then get her some oyster shell in a separate dish. Assuming the antibiotic you gave him cleared up...

    Scaly Leg Mites?

Gosh, I'd say you and she both need a break! I go through SLM (scaley leg mites) about every two years with these chickens. Your poor hen has it pretty bad, but the advice above will get that looking much better! Just keep up the treatment for a couple of weeks and then it just takes time...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yes, for the Niacin. Our chickens eat it too. It works in poultry like Vitamin C in humans: we can't overdose on it as our bodies use what they need and excrete the excess.

Hen gasping for air, no vet available

Just wait for the Tiagard as that may help her. I suspect that rooster minimally had a URI (upper respiratory infection) or MG (Mycoplasma gallisepticum). I'd have her separated where she's kept warm and try to push fluids. You can make a mash out of her crumbles/pellets and water, or try...

Hen gasping for air, no vet available

VetRX is like human Vicks. It can help with symptoms but doesn't cure anything.

Just need a little post-hatch reassurance—Moving to brooder, incubator temp

No clue where we got it...probably a rummage sale. But for a second one, we have those decorative flat glass pebbles too. Those I remember buying back when we had an aquarium.

Best Battery Type for a Small Off-Grid Homestead?

What we currently use to run our camper furnace, lights, and small DC fridge, etc., is two deep-cycle marine batteries. We got ours at Walmart. They supposedly last 10 years, but we've had them for two. As for how many you'd need, there's a calculator we found to figure it out, but I'd think...

Not emergency. Odd urates with clear loose gel, daily on poop tray. Normal?

Do they have oyster shell available to them? I'd wonder if Lizbel or one of them is going to start laying eggs and having difficulties. It would help if you could fence off an area just for her for an hour or so to see if that's her poop or not.

    Feed cost

I would get a camera to watch the feeder at night. No chickens should be triggering it, only whatever else is dining there. If you have no deer cam or camera, we've had Blink for many years, but you could find cheaper ones, I'm sure, and now, while Black Friday sales are going would be a...

How long does a cracked pullet egg last?

Same here. And if we don't know for sure, we'd scramble it up as a great treat for the birds.

Buff Brahma losing weight and crop not emptying

No. It won't hurt her or any of them to treat for worms. The probiotics I suggested for post-antibiotic will also help sour crop. If she doesn't eat, you might have to try hand-feeding her. If you live by a pet store, there's a baby parrot feed, plus fat, by Kaytee we have. In a small...

    Roosting

We too have some right now sleeping on the floor. Eventually, they'll get the nerve to go up to sleep with the rest of them. The last group took about two weeks. I have one younger hen in a breeding pen who still insists on laying eggs on the floor. This has been my motto.

Buff Brahma losing weight and crop not emptying

Hi again! Sorry about your hen. Crop issues can be so frustrating. Where did they see the opacity at? Not her crop, I assume. Since she's been on antibiotics, I'd get her on probiotics for a couple of weeks. That can be powders for water, yogurt, or crumbles that I know Kalmbach's for one...

Show us a pic of your isolation cage

I would transport a chicken in a solid-sided pet carrier, but I'd never want to raise them in one of those. If you have a sick chicken, you want to see it without having to pull it out of a carrier. It'll want to be able to see out too. I have seen a couple of people having a medium-sized...

Kalmbach food leading to poor laying?

Ours are laying way less now too. These are show-quality silkies, and I feed every one of them from chick to adult, Kalmbach's Flock Maker (20%). The hens have a dish of oyster shell. The winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) is on December 21, so things will slowly get better from...

    Wry tail?

Was she ever in a fight or injured? That or genetics can be the cause of it. Unlike wry neck, wry tail usually isn't a vitamin deficiency, but I'd treat it for one anyway if neither of the above can be determined. Do you have others like this? If not laying, are they on a good starter feed...
